This isn’t really about whether players “deserve” compensation.
Octo depends on income to keep the servers running and to continue developing the game. That income comes from donations, and those donations ultimately come from a percentage of the playerbase.
Yes, the game is free, but everyone playing on a start-up server is investing something arguably just as important: time. We’re all taking a bit of a gamble that the server will survive and grow.
Right now, we’re the small snowball rolling downhill. The existing playerbase keeps the world alive, creates groups, fills the economy, and provides content for the new players joining us. The bigger that snowball gets, the better the chances are that Octo succeeds — and, in turn, the more people will be willing to support it financially.
I don’t have a single bad word to say about the Octo team. Quite the opposite: I believe in the team and their vision, and I think they’ve handled a difficult situation well.
But if the DDoS problems continue, I’d like to see some kind of small QoL reward for the players sticking around through it. It doesn’t have to be tokens or anything with monetary value. Something simple like temporarily increased XP and reputation gains would be enough. Hey, what about a 50% discount on tokens?
Not because we’re owed something, but because keeping people playing and progressing during a rough period is probably good for Octo too.
