Their attacks are weak, just like players who play gnomes. They can't endanger us, just like players who play gnomes. We ain't going anywhere.

Relax, It might be Blizzard yet
Yes yes, Blizzard decided to attack only Octowow after years and years of not doing it to other private servers. This is quite plausible if I may say so myself.
Is someone forgetting about a recent lawsuit?
Oh you mean lawsuits which they have been doing to many different private servers over many years? But they only ddos octowow? It must be because you are playing here... or something.

Kestrel wrote: Mon Sep 07, 2026 12:15 pm Timing and shape have both changed for this attack. This attack rapidly adapted to changes we made to our system and routing, indicating an increased desire/attention paid to our infrastructure during the attack. No news on our server setup request/migration yet.
You need to find a new host. The lack of communication and urgency from them is very unprofessional.
Clearly you dont understand how none of this game of cat and mouse works. Instead of complaining on a subject you evidently don't have any grasp on, try to inform yourself before vomiting whatever idea you might have.
This aint your local store manager where you complain to when the strawberries are not good enough for you.

Dear Admins, dear fellow players,

I’ve been on this server since day one – I remember when the biggest lag came from my own potato PC, not from some script‑kiddie’s rented botnet. But lately? Full‑time DDoS carnage, not just in the evenings. It hurts. It really does.

And yet, I watch people whine in global chat like they’re entitled to a perfect experience on a passion project run by mortals. Newsflash: you’re still playing. You’re still here, because these guys (the admins) keep dragging the server back from the dead, night after night, with duct tape, prayers, and whatever coffee they can afford.

So before you type “fix your server” for the hundredth time – let’s talk real numbers. Because most players have no clue what it actually costs to stop a DDoS, or how cheap it is to launch one. Spoiler: attacking is cheaper than a pizza; defending is like buying a small car… every month.

What it costs to DDoS us (the attacker’s side)
Rent a botnet for 1 hour: $7–$40

Buy a “stresser” subscription for a month: ~$30

Some services even offer a $5‑per‑attack deal.

Yes, you read that right. For the price of a fancy coffee, some bored dude can flatten our server for hours. That’s the imbalance we’re fighting.

What it costs to defend properly – three tiers, and the honest odds that we won’t go down
Here’s what the admins would need to throw at the problem. Pick your favourite:

Option 1 – “Band‑Aid & Prayer” (Budget tier)

Hide IP behind a cheap WoW proxy, use a host with basic DDoS filtering, add some iptables love.

Cost: ~$400–$800 / month

Survival chance (attack won’t kill the server): ~70‑80% – fine for random smurfs, but a serious flood will still fold us like origami.

Option 2 – “Professional Punch” (Business tier)

Cloudflare Spectrum (enterprise proxy for any TCP/UDP), automatic scrubbing, a backup server in another datacentre, and 24/7 monitoring.

Cost: ~$3,000–$7,000 / month

Survival chance: ~90‑95% – this handles most multi‑vector assaults up to several Tbps. Only a massive, coordinated attack or a brand‑new exploit might trip us up for a few minutes.

Option 3 – “Nuclear Fortress” (Carrier‑class)

Global Anycast with scrubbing centres, hardware FPGA filters, clustered backend servers in multiple regions, AI behaviour analysis, and a dedicated security team on speed dial.

Cost: ~$10,000–$30,000+ / month

Survival chance: ~99.5‑99.9% – practically bulletproof. Even a nation‑state would have to work hard to take us down. But hey, nothing is 100% – the internet gods can always throw an asteroid at us.

So what can we (the community) do?
We can stop complaining and start contributing. The admins aren’t Blizzard – they don’t have infinite pockets. If we want the server to become more than “barely alive”, we need to crowdfund a serious defence fund. Let’s be real: that Option 2 or 3 money has to come from somewhere.

I’m not saying we all donate a kidney. But if every active player threw in $5‑10 a month, we’d hit the professional tier in no time. That’s less than a month of your favourite MMO subscription – and here, you’re not paying for loot boxes, you’re paying for stability.

So admins: thank you for everything you’ve already done. You’re heroes, even when the server crashes. And players: next time you get disconnected, remember – the attack cost less than your lunch, while the defence costs more than your rent. Let’s stop the whining and start the funding.

Together, we can make this server the unshakable home it deserves to be.

P.S. – If you think this post is too long, just scroll to the numbers. They speak louder than my sarcasm.
