Having brought a pet from Rebellious to Best Friend during leveling recently, all I can imagine that is going wrong is your pet isn't succinctly happy. Especially at Rebellious you have to not only feed it until it is green but also at least once more so it is deep in green. The first step took hours (I didn't had a pet with growl for the time, so I noticed that) but keeping my pet green all the time and avoiding it going yellow during combat was the way.

Not sure how true this info is, but using food that is closer to the pets level or higher tiered food helps maintain happiness longer or fills the hidden gauge quicker so you're not feeding as often. Though I am not 100% saw the info on petopia classic.

That is actually incorrect. Higher food level is best when trying to friend your pet. First 2 levels are easy, but then, trying to get to 3rd takes hours. Best to do is just farm mobs that give xp for 2-3 hours and with luck, your pets happiness will increase.

But always give higher level food than pets level, quicker and best bet for friendship rank.

Afaik, pet loyalty ranks have a time component and an xp-from-monster-kills component. You need to have your pet out for a set amount of time in addition to making monster kills. In addition, your pet needs to be happy for it to count.

Happiness -- keep your pet happy by feeding it the food it wants, at about its level.

A level 5 pet might be fine eating 61 hp fish, like Brilliant Smallfish. A level 12 pet might like 243 hp fish more, like Darkshore Grouper.

When you feed your pet food, in the combat log you will see happiness increase.

- The food of the level your pet likes the most will give 35 happiness per 2 seconds, for 20 seconds
- The lower-level food your pet likes a bit will give 17 happiness per 2 seconds, for 20 seconds
- Even lower-level food will give 8 happiness per 2 seconds, for 20 seconds
- Your high level pet might not eat very low level food.

To get your pet from unhappy to content, or content to happy you need to feed them 350 happiness worth of food. So, either 1 piece of food of the pet's level and wait 20 seconds; or 2 pieces of lower-level food

Once your pet is happy, you can continue feeding them. You will continue getting your food level's worth of happiness points, up to a cap. When you reach that cap, you will see your happiness increase by only 0.7 every 2 seconds. It's just some extra margin before it drops again to yellow.

---

Edit: This is all for just 1 pet. Pets don't gain happiness while stabled. I'd advise continue focusing on one pet at a time until they have a higher, more desired loyalty rank. Then you can swap them out.
