I think it's cheaper than you'd guess. Affordable to keep up for a dedicated bad actor with some stable revenue stream.

However, this is not about the cost of the hit. It's about getting the defense mechanisms in place.

And myself, like many others, is standing by Octo's side, and we'll still be here when we can look back at this.

Regarding "compensation" that many entitled/privileged players so selfishly demand. In my eyes it's for sure not something we're owed. But I can definitely see that it could mutually serve the devs and players, if the devs so choose to distribute it. Raise morale, feeling of appreciation/deserved compensation, increase player loyalty. Who knows, maybe 200 donation points gives players the sweet taste, and thus in turn encourage more donation.

Yeah, I'm with Octo through and through, I was just curious because I see posts talking about "it costs the perpetrator a lot of money" and I'm curious if that's true.

Or is that just figure of speech used by young ppl nowadays to mark(dishonest) group of people they disagree with? I'm asking because I'm seeing this wording from time to time and having hard time to figure out any specific privilege. :O

It´s not desparation. It´s a statement. After the crew announced that monday might be the day that changes things protection-wise they adjusted their order of operations - most likely as a message. "Nothing is going to change, we hit even harder."

It´s on us to endure.

I meant they act entitled and behave as if they're used to be treated with extra privilege (or should be).

I believed my wording would be perceived as such.

As others have said, it's not tremendously expensive in pure monetary terms. The main cost is the legal danger it puts you in; internet anonymity, try as one might, is never perfect, and the more attacks one orders, the more risk there is of being exposed, and then having to deal with legal repercussions. While a private World of Warcraft server is grey-market from the get-go, the upstream providers are *not,* and are being impacted by these attacks also.

The Economics of DDoS Attack Costs

Ordering a simple, small-scale DDoS attack can cost as little as $7: but the DDoS as a service market offers far wider-ranging and more expensive options. Some services allow for a customer to choose a specific attack scenario, and combine different forms of attack depending on the victim’s own circumstances.

Considering one report from cybersecurity researcher Denis Makrushin, ongoing attacks can cost around $20 per hour to conduct, with the provider further offering bonus points and hours in their own version of a loyalty scheme.

When delving into DDoS providers’ profit margins, compare this with the price of virtual servers: Amazon EC2 servers with next-to-no-configuration cost less than $0.007 per hour. 50 of these for a simple attack against an eCommerce store would only cost the cybercriminals around $0.325 for each hour of active attack.

Throw in some additional costs, like a burner SIM card to register the AWS account and a credit card to it, the hourly cost of performing a simple DDoS attack can be as low as $4.

it means these players expect the impossible because they feel like it is owed to them. Entitled.
Means the same thing nowadays as it meant 50years ago.
