how can they take legal action against that community server? Its just a discord what will they do sue us cause we talk about warcraft on a gaming platform? I think they just took the chance to get away from deleting raven bots and mpreg emotes.

I dont believe that legal story i think the discord became an uncontrolable platform for spam bots. How many users u found there mimicking players that cant take it anymore and go to raven now.

Idk isnt there a legal hill to stand on? What about telling Blizz to fuck themselfes? Not for Octo not for any wow server but for the damn right to have a discord about a video game. What world we live in we let us tell what to do from a GAMING COMPANY?

It's all sus whether it was an actual C&D by Blizz, as why would they hit the discord server and not the game? Also they can legally hit the discord server for contributing to an illegal private server. It sucks, but its just how copyright law works.

However I really doubt it was a C&D by Blizz, it was either someone else spoofing a notice, or more likely it was Discord themselves shutting down the server because of the degeneracy that was going on in that server breaking Discord's rules.

It has come to our attention that the largest of our community Discord servers has been shut down after an unjust and absurd legal threat was made against the community member(s) who run it.

The OctoWoW team has no additional insight into this incident, and we have no control or special access to any of the community run Disord servers.

This is a stark reminder of why Discord, social media accounts, and even services like Cloudflare are not safe for any private server archivist/creator.

We also want to take this time to re-iterate our gratefulness for our service provider FlokiNet. The last few weeks have been tough, and part of that is the trade off we made when we architected this anonymous structure.

We have seen some in the community lament the speed at which we are able to get hardware changes made. We view this as a worthy trade off for the security and anonymity that we have. Our service provider FlokiNet has been instrumental to our ability to host the server, and they have been supportive of our legal rights in a way that most providers could never.

One of our first correspondences (over three months ago) with the FlokiNet Support Team was them forwarding us a domain name dispute Blizzard made in an attempt to gain control of our domain. This included a (standard) €1,000 dispute fee that would be paid by Blizzard if they complied. FlokiNet threw the documents in the trash so to speak.

We are grateful for the work you put into this, and I want you to know that, even though I cannot speak for everyone, we are here, even in these dark times. Unfortunately, there are people who don't understand anything; they read a Reddit post or watch a YouTube video and then badmouth everyone else, and that is not acceptable.

Great things require patience, determination, and strength, including from the community.

A friend recommended "Fluxer," saying it was similar to Discord, with a different but simple interface. I tried it and the sound quality was quite good

Have you considered using an open-source, self-hosted alternative to Discord? I don’t want to promote anything, but “Revolt” offers the closest user experience. Personally, I don’t even like Discord—I used Teamspeak many years ago—but for most people here, it would be an easy transition to something that looks and works more or less the same as Discord, while still maintaining that “touch” of privacy.

Hey Kestrel, indeed the Discord account was deleted and we users were kicked out without even being told why. Typical corporate trash moves. Maybe you know a tool that the Octo community could use where we could keep communicating and sharing information? Continuing to use Discord seems pointless right now, this app is a corporate project focused on collecting data and selling it further.At the end, I send greetings to the whole Octo Team. You do amazing work and a ton of people are grateful to you for it!

As far as accommodating the players, I don't think the octo devs should or need to offer more than their website/forum and client. Of course the forum needs a major overhaul. It's unfortunately riddled with bugs. And when/if the devs transition us to the UE5 client down the line, that also allows for in-game voice chat I believe.

The community, on the other hand, should host anything they want outside that scope.

Exactly this. Communities can form wherever they want, but considering the situation of the Octo team, they should only host the forum. There are a lot of Discord servers out there anyways - especially for guilds.

I, for my part, am not a fan of Discord anyways. I just saw some "watch party" for a movie being hosted yesterday. Dunno if that's the cause of the ban, but this will always be an issue with services that are being hosted in the US.
