STEP 1 : OctoWoW Launcher and base game files

This section guides you through downloading the official launcher and installing the core game files required to play on OctoWoW.

1. Go HERE and click "Download Launcher".

This will download the OctoWoW Installer. Run the OctoWoW Installer and check the box "Run OctoLauncher", then click "Finish".

2. In the Launcher, click "Install" Create an "OctoWoW" folder somewhere and point this installation to the newly created folder.

If the download fails or won't start, please run the launcher as administrator or spam update button

STEP 2 : Configure Antivirus Exclusions

Before downloading or running the setup tool, you must add your OctoWoW installation folder as an exception in Windows Defender (or your third-party antivirus software).

Why is this required? Modifying the 1.12.1 client relies heavily on .dll injection and executable patching to modernize the 1.12.1 client (expanding memory, fixing ping, altering engine limits). Because these modifications edit WoW.exe and inject code at runtime, heuristic antivirus scanners frequently flag them as false-positive threats (often labeled as generic trojans or hack tools). Adding an exclusion ensures Windows does not silently quarantine essential game files or the installer itself.

1. Open "Windows Security" > "Virus & threat protection".



2. Under "Virus & threat protection settings", click "Manage settings".



3. Scroll down to "Exclusions" and click "Add or remove exclusions".



4. Click "Add an exclusion", select "Folder", and target your main OctoWoW directory.





STEP 3 : Manual Mod Installation (If you use the launcher)

You can use the tweaks and install your mods directly through the launcher. If you plan on using the launcher to play and want to add more mods, here’s a guide explaining how to install them manually:


1. Install VanillaFixes from the launcher (Mods tab).



2. Download your mod's .dll file (you can use the sources listed further down in this guide) and place it in your game folder.

Why Antivirus Flags It:

Modifying the 1.12.1 client relies heavily on ".dll" injection and executable patching to expand memory, fix ping, or alter engine limits. Because these processes edit WoW.exe and inject code at runtime, heuristic antivirus scanners frequently flag them as false-positive threats (often labeled as generic trojans or hack tools).

You will need to restore them from quarantine. For Windows 11, go to Settings >> Privacy & Security >> Windows Security >> Virus & Threat Protection. Under Current Threats, click "Protection History". Select the blocked files and choose to restore them so Windows stops instantly deleting them.

3. Open the "dlls.txt" file with Notepad (you'll find it in your game folder).



4. Add one line per mod you want to load, writing the exact name of the .dll file (e.g., "SuperWoWhook.dll", "Nampower.dll"), then save the file.



5. Now you can use the launcher and click play to launch the game.



STEP 3 BIS : Modernization Tool (If you don't use the launcher)

This section guides you through downloading and installing various mods and performance tweaks using the Modernization Tool.

What is the Modernization Tool? Imagine you have a cool classic car from 2004 (that's your Vanilla WoW game). It looks great, but it lacks modern features like power steering, Bluetooth, or a modern engine.

This tool is like a mechanic that automatically upgrades your classic car with modern technology so it runs perfectly on today's computers, without you having to change a single file yourself!

1. Download the latest Modernization Tool HERE

No traditional installation is required. Download and run:

WoW_Modernization_Tool.exe

If your antivirus blocks and instantly deletes this tool, we need to tell your computer that these files are safe. So we are going back into Virus settings.

Why Antivirus Flags It:

For Windows 11, this is Settings >> Privacy & Security >> Windows Security >> Virus & Threat Protection. Under Current Threats, click "Protection History". Now pick which "threats" you want to restore so your computer stops instantly deleting the file. Redownload the Modernization Tool if needed.

2. Open the tool and click "Browse" to select your OctoWoW installation directory.



The Modernization Tool remembers its settings separately for each WoW installation.

3. Setup & Rendering Tab: Choose your renderer and configure the optional AutoLogin feature and DXVK FPS limiter. The FPS limit is automatically set from the highest refresh rate detected on your connected displays and can be changed manually.

Rendering:

• VanillaFixes — DirectX 9 [Recommended Default]
  • Uses WoW's native DirectX 9 renderer together with VanillaFixes.
  • This is the default option and the best place to start for most users.
• VanillaFixes + DXVK — Vulkan
  • Uses DXVK to translate DirectX 9 rendering to Vulkan.
  • Can provide different performance and frame pacing depending on your system.
  • Requires a Vulkan-compatible graphics card and driver.

There is no longer a separate "AMD version" or "NVIDIA version".

Simply choose between VanillaFixes / DirectX 9 and VanillaFixes + DXVK / Vulkan.

If DXVK causes graphical glitches or crashes, simply switch back to VanillaFixes / DirectX 9.

AutoLogin:

The Tool can optionally install Vanilla AutoLogin.

This allows saved account and character shortcuts to appear directly on the Vanilla login screen.

When AutoLogin + Nampower are enabled together, the Modernization Tool automatically creates or reuses the Windows user encryption key required by Nampower.

Password encryption is enabled by default when available.

Existing encryption keys are never replaced.

The encryption key is stored in the Windows user environment and is not written into the WoW game folder.

4. Plugins Tab: Select which "Recommended Core" and "Optional Plugins" you want to install.

Discord Rich Presence Privacy Options:

When Discord Rich Presence is enabled, you can choose which character details are displayed on Discord:

• Character Name
• Guild
• Race
• Faction
• Class
• Level
• Zone

The "Show character details" option quickly enables all details at once.

If Discord is running as Administrator, WoW must also be running as Administrator for Rich Presence to work.

5. Vanilla Tweaks Tab: Adjust your Field of View (auto-calculated to your screen), render distances and system limits using the sliders.

• Field of View
  • Function: Adjusts the game's Field of View according to your selected screen aspect ratio.
• Render Distance
  • Function: Adjusts the maximum terrain render distance.
• Ground Clutter Distance
  • Function: Adjusts the distance at which grass and environmental clutter are rendered.
• Nameplate Distance
  • Function: Adjusts the maximum distance at which nameplates can appear.
• Camera Distance
  • Function: Adjusts the maximum camera zoom-out distance.
• Sound Channels
  • Function: Adjusts the maximum number of simultaneous audio channels.
• Always Auto-Loot
  • Function: Enables automatic looting and allows Shift to be used for manual looting.
• Background Sounds
  • Function: Keeps game sounds active while WoW is minimized or in the background.
• Large Address Aware (LAA) [Recommended]
  • Function: Allows the 32-bit WoW client to use more memory and helps reduce Out-of-Memory crashes.
• Fix Camera Skip Glitch [Recommended]
  • Function: Fixes the old Vanilla camera snapping glitch. [Recommended]
• Disable DEP [Recommended]
  • Function: Improves compatibility with client DLL hooks. Requires Administrator privileges.
• Unlimited AddOn Script Memory [Recommended]
  • Function: Removes the original AddOn Script Memory limit.
• Cross-Faction Resurrection Fix
  • Function: Adds compatibility for cross-faction resurrection.
• Custom Glues Patch [Recommended]
  • Function: Enables compatible custom login and character-selection interface files.
• Bluemoon Patch
  • Function: Restores the rare blue moon visual effect.
• Automatic WDB Management [Recommended]
  • Function: Automatically manages the WDB cache to prevent outdated cached game data without requiring manual deletion.

6. Visual & Audio Tab: Optionally install visual and sound improvements directly through the Modernization Tool.

Visual Mods:

• Darker Nights
  • Makes nighttime environments darker and more atmospheric.
• Pretty Night Sky
  • Replaces the Vanilla night sky with a more detailed starry sky.
• Epoch Water
  • Replaces the standard Vanilla water textures.
• Fog Pushback
  • Pushes environmental fog farther back for a clearer long-distance view.
• Pink Herbs
  • Makes herb nodes much easier to spot.

All visual mods are disabled by default.


Audio Mods:

• NoErrorSounds | Source
  • Removes repetitive error and interface sounds.
• FishPing | Source
  • Replaces the fishing bite sound with a clearer ping.
• Warlock Muted Demons | Source
  • Mutes repetitive Warlock demon voice lines.

All audio mods are disabled by default.

7. Credits & Sources Tab: View the projects, sources and developers used by the Modernization Tool.

You can use this tab to find the original source of each included project.

8. Click "Apply Setup & Tweaks".

Click "Yes" if Windows requests Administrator privileges for the DEP compatibility tweak.

9. Launch the Client with the generated "Play Modernized WoW" shortcut.

The shortcut is automatically created:

• Inside your WoW game folder
• On your Windows Desktop

YOU WILL ALWAYS CLICK THIS ICON TO PLAY THE GAME.

IMPORTANT: Do not launch the modernized client directly via "WoW.exe".

The Modernization Tool creates a separate WoW_Modernized.exe while preserving your original WoW.exe.

Smart Updates & Automatic Repair

The Modernization Tool automatically checks supported components when you click "Apply Setup & Tweaks".

• Files that are already current are not downloaded again unnecessarily.
• Missing or modified managed files can automatically be detected and repaired.
• Supported components can use known-good fallback files if an online source is temporarily unavailable.
• Existing valid files are preserved whenever possible instead of breaking an existing installation.

Updating the Modernization Tool

Updating the Modernization Tool does not require reinstalling WoW.

Simply:

• Download the latest Modernization Tool release.
• Select your existing WoW folder.
• Review your settings.
• Click "Apply Setup & Tweaks" again.

Your settings will automatically be restored.



STEP 4 : Install AddOns easily with GitAddonManager

To make installing and updating your Vanilla addons effortless, we highly recommend using GitAddonManager. It downloads addons directly from their source repositories, automatically renaming folders to remove the "-master" tag, and keeps them up-to-date with one click!

1. Download the latest release of GitAddonManager Extract and launch it.

2. Inside the app, point the directory path to your game's "Interface\AddOns" folder so the tool knows where to install them.



3. Find the AddOns you want to install. You will need their Git URL (GitHub or GitLab link). Here are the two best places to find compatible Vanilla 1.12 addons:

• Turtle WoW Wiki: Visit https://turtle-wow.fandom.com/wiki/Addons. Most 1.12.1 addons listed here (like pfUI, ShaguTweaks, etc.) work perfectly on OctoWoW!
• Octo Fan Community Discord: Check the dedicated addon section to find custom modifications specifically tailored for the server by the community.

4. Copy the repository link of the addon (for example: https://github.com/brues-code/pfUI.git).



5. In GitAddonManager, click the "+" button, paste your URL, and let the tool download and extract it into your game. You can use the "Update All" button in the future to keep everything fresh!



TROUBLESHOOTING

If your game is crashing, please go through the following steps:

• Disable all AddOns temporarily and verify whether the crash still occurs.
• If DXVK/Vulkan causes issues or your GPU does not support Vulkan, switch back to VanillaFixes (DirectX 9) in the Modernization Tool.
• If you are using No1600x1200, temporarily disable it and retry.
• Enable Vertex Animation Shaders in WoW's Video settings.
• Reduce Render Distance inside the Modernization Tool.
  A value around the original Vanilla range is useful when testing stability.
• Temporarily disable manually installed third-party MPQ patches.
  This applies especially to patches that were installed outside the Modernization Tool.
• Disable optional client DLL plugins one by one.
  If the crash disappears, re-enable them gradually until you identify the conflicting component.
• Clear or reset your WDB cache.
  You can use the Modernization Tool's Automatic WDB Management option.

Other Known Issues & Fixes:

• Flickering mouse cursor
  Disable "Hardware Cursor" inside WoW:
  Options → Miscellaneous → Hardware Cursor
• pfUI + Minimap Icons
  If your client crashes during /reload or login and you use pfUI with a moved/customized minimap, temporarily disable:
  [WeirdUtils] Minimap Icons
  and test again.
• DXVK graphical glitches
  Switch the Modernization Tool Renderer back to:
  VanillaFixes — DirectX 9
• DLL or WoW_Modernized.exe disappeared
  Check Windows Security's Protection History.
  If a component was quarantined, restore it after confirming that it came from the expected source.
• Discord Rich Presence does not appear
  Make sure Discord Rich Presence is enabled in the Plugins tab.
  If Discord is running as Administrator, WoW must also run as Administrator.

Hi, so ive come across an issue with classicapi. I have the file downloaded and im trying to place it into the directory but im most defintely doing it wrong. Not very computer savy but i have tried following the instructions. !!!classicapi is in the octowow addon folder but i keep getting an error "the classicapi DLL isnt loaded. The !!!classicAPI addon ships bundled with it -- delete yout !!!classicAPI folder and install the latest release".

You just need to download the dll here: https://github.com/brues-code/ClassicAP ... tag/v1.8.5



Then copy this dll to the root of your octowow folder and add the line ClassicAPI.dll into the dlls.txt file like this:



After that you just need to launch the game

If you don't have a dlls.txt file it means you haven't installed vanillafixes, so open the launcher, check vanillafixes, install it, and then do the step for the dlls.txt file again



If you copied a '!!!classicapi' folder into the AddOns folder, delete it because you don't need it
