Addons are a perfect example. They aren't part of the game, yet many raid leaders already expect players to have them. Players are constantly asked to install specific addons before being allowed into raids. If achievements become another standardized metric, hiding them won't change much. It will simply become: "Please unhide your achievements." or "Why are they hidden?" The social pressure remains exactly the same.

are u really comparing addons with achievements?

although personally, i would love if there was no addon such as bigwigs (so that everyone could really prove their worth on mechanics), not asking a new inexperienced raider to install them gonna 100% negatively impact the whole raid
Arsarcana wrote: Thu Aug 06, 2026 8:50 am Yet many of them eventually became expected simply because the community adopted them.
the community didnt just adopt them
Depending on your class, Bigwigs - Rinse/decursive - ThreatMeters - raidframes are ESSENTIAL for raiding

bad comparison imo

Ironically, I think your reply illustrates exactly the point I'm trying to make.

Today it's "addons are ESSENTIAL." Years ago they were optional. That's exactly how community standards evolve.

I'm not comparing what addons and achievements do. I'm comparing how communities gradually turn optional systems into expected - or even mandatory - ones.

Achievements will never have the same value as addons or be essential to raid
bad example, lets move on

I find achievements fun in the way Ashen Banner (I think that's the guild name) does it. Just a bit of fun between their own members. Or that's how it looks to me as an outsider. My main concern is the inevitable changes in mentality public serverwide achievements would bring.

In a couple months you won't be able to get into mc without linking the achievement for domo. A year after that someone will ask you what your gearscore is.

Worst part is we've all been carried through stuff before and we've all carried people through stuff before. It's perfectly possible to not know how to move for living bomb and have the mc achievement, as it's very likely in 30+ people you weren't the 1 to get hit.

We've already been through this once. The slope gets especially slippery when people start asking for mc ilvl gear just to pug an mc.

What also needs to be understood is that this change wouldn't impact most of us already here, it will just make the ground floor harder for those that come after.

And I might be assuming much here - but that's how all of this went the first time somewhere around wrath.

From my point of view I think an achievement system can be fun. However what I would want the development team to be clear about is what we don't get if this is implemented. The poll in the way that it's setup now is like saying to kids "do you like candy"? Yes!!!!

However in the real world if you do A you don't get to do B. What is B? And if there is no B, why ask if you should do A?

Okay, then find a different raid that doesn't care about achievements. There's a dozen other things already in the game like this. Don't want to play with a raid that requires you to parse within a certain range? Cool, there's plenty of raids that don't require that. If anything this is helping you find the right group of people to play with.

If that's all you got from what I've said, sure.
