Dont give free dono points, players should be happy we have a server that most of the time has 0 issues, not like octowow asked to gwt ddos'd, not like octo team Fd up and we couldnt play because they forgot to press server online....

So if the original poster’s friend promises to give them a ride, the friend’s car gets stolen when the ride was going to be given, but the car is later recovered, would OP demand some kind of compensation from the friend?
This was totally out of Octo’s control. They were the ones attacked. Yeah, it affected you and every other player too. But the circumstances in this case in no way obligate Octo to give you anything. We deal with it and move on.

They say they value our time and dedication to their server, so they do owe us when the server is unstable and unplayable for hours as people keep trying to log back in.
"We can't get proper Cloudflare DDoS protection in place because of subpoenas, but after the attack we've now implemented the proper defense."
Why not before when you knew you're lacking it and it's a common thing...
*gets DDoS'd 5 mins later again*
I think this warrants a show of goodwill in form of tokens to make up for lost time, trust and time restricted community events - weekend evenings are valuable for working (paying) folks.
"The server is free, we don't deserve anything."
> Maybe free for you, if you never donate, but many had and will or the server dies/doesn't get proper development - most people understand that. And they have investors (or as they say 'a few generous backers') that probably expect money back as this model can make a ton.
TLDR. I think giving tokens for failed evening is good for their image and an investment now that community needs to grow and people are still deciding where to play.

But the issue was not with the server. It was functioning how it is supposed to, I.e. taking requests and responding. This was exploited. You're essentially crying that the local McDonalds was robbed at gun point and thus was closed so you need free food for you inconvenience because you really wanted chicken nuggies that day. They can value your choice to play here and not be at fault for what happened...

I don't think you understand remotely how complex such things are. Blizzard servers have been taken down by similar attacks and they are have a multi-billion dollar fortune backing them. This is not a case of "oh we forgot to press the make our server immune to all attacks button".

I don't think you understand the concept of a donation. It entitles you to nothing outside of the tokens that are promised for it. No matter what happens.
You had
one evening during which you had to not sit at your computer and play one specific game because the people doing the work of providing it for you and asking nothing in return were under a malicious attack. I find it incredibly greedy and selfish to even fathom you should receive compensation for this. Hell, I don't for a second think any of this is done in good faith but rather opportunistically for personal gain from an unfortunate situation.
"Hey, Larry, we were supposed to play football in the park yesterday. I know your car broke down and you couldn't make it, but I'm going to need you to give me a gift now because I had planned on going so you kinda owe it to me since you say we're friends."

This isnt a mobile game rofl. You cant be serious and must be trolling.
Imagine going to McDonald's, getting a free burger every day, then they are closed for a day, and the next day you complain that you didn't get your free burger and that you now want the entire Menu as compensation.

You sound like the kind of person who gets mad when a place closes down due to a burst pipe and want a 75% discount because you couldn't get in on that day.
We don't need comp. There's other crap you can do when the server is down. Thats what my buddies and I did, went and played another VIDEOGAME till then

Few people care whether the server is unstable because of devs or DDoS - the server was down, they couldn't play when they wanted to and might swap to other stable server or game.
Players can't be expected to understand how complex such things are. That's the provider's job. Players just want the game working. Who knows whether Blizzard just wanted to save money and didn't properly prepare - Turtle got DDoS'd, implemented some honeypot thing within few hours, never got DDoS'd again. It's reasonable to expect that to already be in place on future servers. (like the honeypot Discord channel)
Donations might not entitle you to anything but there are expectations: Players donate in expectation that server works and develops + Devs expect donations to keep server and development up (and eventually make money). No one is entitled to it, no one is suing, but expectations of a side should be fulfilled if the side is to keep providing. Disappointed players leave and don't donate.
For working people with social lives that often only have Sunday evening free and without stress (perhaps that's why DDoS happened at that particular time) that
one evening matters quite a lot.
Even if this request might be driven by greed and selfishness, I still believe it'd improve the server's future by motivating players to stay.

You guys are right, my reasoning was flawed. It's not Octo's fault so they don't need to compensate.
With that being said, I still believe it would be kind gesture.
