You say that as if it's a fact, but I don't remember any poll asking new players why they joined. A good bunch of new guilds formed before the xp change. The way I see it, it could very well be that these players just dragged their friends along.
So the advantages I see for more xp are mainly:
- The majority of players seems to welcome this change
- PvP lovers (so probably the bigger part of the server) could start earlier to increase the PvP part of their play time.
Two very convinding reasons in my eyes.
You seem to be forgetting another very important thing in favor of x2 XP is that as much as lower level PvP can be fun — it is overwhelmingly unbalanced ; eg. Rogues have access to most of their defensive cooldowns (evasion/vanish/sprint) and control kit at very low levels on top of instant attacks that other classes need talent points or higher levels to claim [kind reminder normalisation was introduced to nerf this]!
Hunters have unmatched mobility due to very few gap closing mechanics available at lower levels and their pets are absolutely broken with very little gear as they straight up are equal or better than most classes etc.
The list goes on & on but you get my point. The game is meant to be played around fully talented lvl 60 players with potions accessible and trinkets equipped. The entire balance revolves around it and a lot of the leveling phase PvP isn't fun for many classes, namely warriors who pretty much are sitting ducks until at least lvl 36-40 where they get their first instant attacks or priests who really can't do much other than shield and wand
Overall it's healthier and since the PvE/PvP server have the same roadmap we have nearly 2 months of leveling/grinding/raiding to catch up to be on par
