The crates aren't there to give you good food items, they're there as a lifeline for people who don't have ANY food items. Start putting good items in there and they'll be useful to everyone so there will be competition for them with people who actually need the items inside them.
Plus, putting profession rewards into random boxes just lowers the value of them on the AH and disincentivises getting the profession to begin with.
Regarding the prof's items in random boxes. We already have this; you can find bars/ors/leather/potions/bolts in battered chests.
The price of food created by the profession on auction is cheap; sometimes you can earn more just by selling it to a vendor. So this will absolutely not farm them. The price rises only closer to level 60.
I think the effect of finding something interesting in the random box (that most of the players skip) will only increase interest to the game.
Do understand that regardless of everything you just said you still didn't address the core issue which is that the food boxes are intentionally not designed to be a good place to look for items. They are there for people who are desperate. Making them worth checking just means they will be less available for the people who actually need them.
Moreover, potions and mats are found in treasure chests, not the incredibly abundant food crates or drink barrels. Treasure chests are effectively the rare mobs of the crate/barrel world. Of course they drop rare loot. And furthermore, I said lower the value on the AH because the items themselves will become less valuable owing to abundance, not because people will farm them. There's no way it would ever be more economical to farm boxes for food than to just kill the mobs that already drop what you need to make the food.
What you're suggesting isn't an improvement to the crates and barrels. They aren't supposed to be interesting. They're a lifeline for casters who are out of mana and non-healers who are low on health. Even if we suggest something similar like a rare-spawn food crate/drink barrel it would just incentivise people to destroy the crates/barrels when they find them in hopes of a rare respawning whilst they're nearby. There's no way to add a treasure functionality to that system that doesn't make it a worse support system.
