Disappearing crops - WTF?

Come on, developers. Creating a profession that can craft an item that takes a shitload of tending and wait time to produce - ONLY to have it disappear if you logout for a minute. What is that?
Even more so in a time of unstable service.
Why do planters with crops disappear on logout. That is not very well thought through. An explanation would be appreciated.
