STEP 1 : OctoWoW Launcher and base game files

This section guides you through downloading the official launcher and installing the core game files required to play on OctoWoW.

1. Go HERE and click "Download Launcher".
This will download the OctoWoW Installer. Run the OctoWoW Installer and check the box "Run OctoLauncher", then click "Finish".


2. In the Launcher, click "Install" Create an "OctoWoW" folder somewhere and point this installation to the newly created folder.

If the download fails or won't start, please run the launcher as administrator or spam update button

STEP 2 : Configure Antivirus Exclusions

Before downloading or running the setup tool, you must add your OctoWoW installation folder as an exception in Windows Defender (or your third-party antivirus software).

Why is this required? Modifying the 1.12.1 client relies heavily on .dll injection and executable patching to modernize the 1.12.1 client (expanding memory, fixing ping, altering engine limits). Because these modifications edit WoW.exe and inject code at runtime, heuristic antivirus scanners frequently flag them as false-positive threats (often labeled as generic trojans or hack tools). Adding an exclusion ensures Windows does not silently quarantine essential game files or the installer itself.

1. Open "Windows Security" > "Virus & threat protection" .



2. Under "Virus & threat protection settings", click "Manage settings".



3. Scroll down to "Exclusions" and click "Add or remove exclusions".



4. Click "Add an exclusion", select "Folder", and target your main OctoWoW directory.





STEP 3 : Manual Mod Installation (If you use the launcher)

You can use the tweaks and install your mods directly through the launcher. If you plan on using the launcher to play and want to add more mods, here’s a guide explaining how to install them manually:

1. Install VanillaFixes from the launcher (Mods tab).



2. Download your mod's .dll file (you can use the sources listed further down in this guide) and place it in your game folder.

Why Antivirus Flags It :

Modifying the 1.12.1 client relies heavily on ".dll" injection and executable patching to expand memory, fix ping, or alter engine limits. Because these processes edit WoW.exe and inject code at runtime, heuristic antivirus scanners frequently flag them as false-positive threats (often labeled as generic trojans or hack tools).

You will need to restore them from quarantine. For Windows 11, go to Settings >> Privacy & Security >> Windows Security >> Virus & Threat Protection. Under Current Threats, click "Protection History". Select the blocked files and choose to restore them so Windows stops instantly deleting them

3. Open the "dlls.txt" file with Notepad (you'll find it in your game folder).



4. Add one line per mod you want to load, writing the exact name of the .dll file (e.g., "SuperWoWhook.dll", "Nampower.dll"), then save the file.



5. Now you can use the launcher and click play to launch the game.



STEP 3 BIS : Modernization Tool (If you don't use the launcher)




This section guides you through downloading and installing various mods and performance tweaks using the Modernization Tool.

What is the Modernization Tool? Imagine you have a cool classic car from 2004 (that's your Vanilla WoW game). It looks great, but it lacks modern features like power steering, Bluetooth, or a modern engine.
This tool is like a mechanic that automatically upgrades your classic car with modern technology so it runs perfectly on today's computers, without you having to change a single file yourself!

1. Download the Modernization Tool HERE

If your antivirus blocks and instantly deletes this tool, we need to tell your computer that these files are safe. So we are going back into Virus settings.

Why Antivirus Flags It :

Because these processes edit WoW.exe and inject code at runtime, heuristic antivirus scanners frequently flag them as false-positive threats (often labeled as generic trojans or hack tools).

For Windows 11, this is Settings>>Privacy & Security>>Windows Security>>Virus & Threat Protection. Under Current Threats, click "Protection History". Now pick which "threats" you want to restore so your computer stops instantly deleting the file. Redownload the Modernization tool if needed.

2. Open the tool and click "Browse" to select your OctoWoW installation directory.



3. Setup & DXVK Tab: Select your GPU type (Choose AMD if you use an AMD graphics card to prevent crashes). You can also toggle the "Auto-Login" mod here.

RTX 2060 minimum recommended for Nvidia version. If not use AMD version.

4. Plugins Tab: Select which "Recommended Core DLLs" and "optional WeirdUtils" you want to install.


Recommended Core :

• Nampower v4.6.0 | Mod Source | Addon Source [Recommended]
  • Implements ping compensation. It bypasses a 1.12 client flaw that prevents queuing spell casts until server acknowledgment is received. This enables tighter spell batching and significantly increases cast efficiency for players with network latency.
• no1600x1200 | (Legacy file)
  • This is an experimental fix for Vanilla 1.12 only showing 1600x1200 resolution instead of widescreen or ultrawidescreen.
• PerfBoost | Mod Source | Addon Source
  • A performance optimization DLL for World of Warcraft 1.12.1 that provides advanced render distance controls to improve FPS in crowded areas and in raids. Features - Selective Unit Rendering: Control render distances for different types of units (players, pets, trash mobs, corpses).
• SuperWoW v2.0 | Mod Source | Addon Source [Recommended]
  • SuperWoW enables a lot of advanced lua features that are not available in the vanilla client. Lots of addons utilize or are greatly enhanced by it. It also doubles the macro character limit - up to 511 characters. And much more!
• TransmogFix | Source Repository [Recommended]
  • Eliminates FPS drops caused by rapid equipment visual updates when transmogged items lose durability.
• UnitXP_SP3 | Mod Source | Addon Source [Recommended]
  • Adjust camera, Background notifications, Check line of sight in Lua, Debug interface for in-game Lua, Measure distance in Lua, Various network, TCP, ACK tweaks, Proper nameplates, Screenshot in JPEG file, Better Tab targeting function, And more!
• VanillaHelpers | Source Repository [Recommended (If you have HD mods)]
  • Vastly expands engine limits. Raises the client memory allocator capacity from 2GB to 4GB to prevent Out-of-Memory crashes. Introduces modern high-resolution texture support (up to 1024x1024), 4x character skins, character morphing, and client file read/write operations. (This mod is required for HD mod to work)
• WeirdPerformance | Mod Source
  • Function: A lightweight optimization addon that boosts FPS and fixes UI memory leaks for a smoother, stutter-free experience.

Optional WeirdUtils :

• Big Cursor | Mod Source
  • Upscales the hardware cursor for improved visibility on modern high-resolution displays (e.g., 1440p / 4K) without losing sharpness
• Custom Assets | Mod Source
  • Allows you to load loose game files directly from the Data/ folder and use custom multi-character patch names without having to repack MPQ archives
• Log Sessions | Mod Source
  • Organizes combat and chat logs into clean, per-character, per-day files automatically upon login
• Minimap Icons | Mod Source
  • Adds TBC/WotLK-style minimap tracking icons for NPCs and game objects, with a combined tracking menu and character-saved preferences

  • Saves screenshots as compressed PNG files instead of the default uncompressed TGA format. Runs on a background thread with no frame drops.

5. Vanilla Tweaks Tab: Adjust your Field of View (auto-calculated to your screen), render distances, and system limits using the sliders.

• Always auto-loot
  • Function: Automatically loots all items from corpses or containers instantly upon opening.
• Large Address Aware (LAA) [Recommended]
  • Function: Allows the 32-bit WoW client to use up to 4GB of RAM instead of 2GB, drastically reducing crashes and out-of-memory errors.
• Disable DEP [Recommended]
  • Function: Disables Data Execution Prevention for the game client, preventing random executable memory crashes and improving compatibility with custom DLL injects.
• Background sounds
  • Function: Allows game sounds to continue playing while the game is minimized or in the background.
• Fix Camera Skip Glitch [Recommended]
  • Function: Fixes a bug where right-clicking and dragging to rotate the camera occasionally snaps your view in a random direction.

Crucial Fix: Ensure "Disable DEP (Requires Admin)" is checked! This automatically disables Data Execution Prevention for the patched client, preventing Windows from instantly crashing the game due to SuperWoW's memory hooks

6. Click "Apply Setup & Tweaks". (Click "Yes" if Windows prompts you for Administrator privileges for the DEP fix).



7. Launch the Client with the newly generated "Play Modernized WoW" shortcut located in your game folder.

YOU WILL ALWAYS CLICK THIS ICON TO PLAY THE GAME.

IMPORTANT: Do not launch the game via "WoW.exe".

STEP 4 : Install AddOns easily with GitAddonManager

To make installing and updating your Vanilla addons effortless, we highly recommend using GitAddonManager. It downloads addons directly from their source repositories, automatically renaming folders to remove the "-master" tag, and keeps them up-to-date with one click!

1. Download the latest release of GitAddonsManager Extract and launch it.

2. Inside the app, point the directory path to your game's "Interface\AddOns" folder so the tool knows where to install them.



3. Find the Addons you want to install. You will need their Git URL (GitHub or GitLab link). Here are the two best places to find compatible Vanilla 1.12 addons:

• Turtle WoW Wiki: Visit https://turtle-wow.fandom.com/wiki/Addons. Most 1.12.1 addons listed here (like pfUI, ShaguTweaks, etc.) work perfectly on OctoWoW!
• Octo Fan Community Discord: Check the dedicated addon to find custom modifications specifically tailored for our server by the community.

4. Copy the repository link of the addon
(for example: https://github.com/brues-code/pfUI.git).



5. In GitAddonManager, click the "+" button, paste your URL, and let the tool download and extract it perfectly into your game. You can use the "Update All" button in the future to keep everything fresh!






Useful Tweaks & Optimization


WDB / Cache Management Tweaks:
Tired of manually deleting your WDB cache folder to avoid glitches? Pick one of these 3 methods to automate or block it completely!

• Option 1: The "Dummy File" Trick (Ultra Easy)
  • Tricks Windows so the game client can never create a WDB cache folder again.
    • 1. Go to your main game directory and delete the "WDB" folder.
    • 2. Create a brand new Text Document (".txt") in that exact spot.
    • 3. Rename it simply to "WDB" and remove the ".txt" extension at the end. (Ensure you have "File name extensions" enabled in your Windows explorer settings!)
• Option 2: Lock Folder Permissions (Easy)
  • Blocks the game from writing any new data into the folder.
    • 1. Open your "WDB" folder and delete everything inside so it is completely empty.
    • 2. Go back, right-click the empty "WDB" folder, and select Properties.
    • 3. Go to the Security tab, click Edit, and for every group/user listed, check the Deny box for Write permissions. Click Apply and Save.

TROUBLESHOOTING


If your game is crashing, please go through the following steps:

• Disable all AddOns and verify if the crashes stop.
• If you have no1600x1200 mod, disable it and retry.
• Enable Vertex Animation Shaders in your WoW Video settings.
• Reduce the Render Distance in the Modernization Tool settings. (Recommended Vanilla value: 777)
• Remove all non-supported custom MPQ patches (like Darker Nights or HD Models).

  We do not recommend using unsupported modifications; they can interfere with gameplay and corrupt your client.

• Switch your DXVK version. If your PC doesn't support Vulkan, try the AMD version instead in the modernization tool or uncheck it in launcher.

• If using pfUI: If your game crashes every time you "/reload" or log back in, it might be a conflict with the "Minimap Icons" module from the Modernization Tool. ➔ Go to your AddOn list and disable "[WeirdUtils] Minimap Icons". This is especially common if you have moved your minimap position using pfUI.

Other Known Issues & Fixes:

• If you have a flickering mouse cursor: Disable "Hardware Cursor" in-game via Options > Miscellaneous.

Hi, I made the modernization tool.

Does anyone have a continuation of Nampower? It seems all the latest version on https://gitea.com/avitasia/nampower seem to be taken down.

Lots of good features in this but ever since installing it I'm getting weird micro stutter when panning the camera around my character and objects look a bit blurry. Any idea why this is happening?

This absolutely borks the hell out of my game. Not recommended.
