From c3a0315985c805d5ca69edf8c5a4e8ed05c6c5f8 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: grom Date: Tue, 3 Nov 2026 19:09:22 -0700 Subject: [PATCH] map: the three capitals with no traced outline drew nothing; feather them OpenMapClassic declines to stitch a city with no MapCityMask and names the three it means -- Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus -- so zooming into the Alliance capitals showed the zone's painting of them and never their own map. The stated worry is a hard box. PlaceBase takes the outline and the edge feather in the same argument, and the city branch passes MapCityMask\ as the feather, so a city with no outline can go through the slot its outline would have used. A feather is the answer to a hard box. Captured at zoom 30: Stormwind's districts, harbour and Valley of Heroes, blended into Elwynn. The trace was attempted first, and this is the record so nobody re-runs it: unlike the zones' land masks there are three shipped city masks to fit against, so it is a fitting problem. Local-contrast detail, threshold, close at quarter scale, largest blob, holes filled, dilate, blur, swept over the three parameters -- best IoU 0.58, and it swallows the sheet's own torn frame, because a city sheet is busy out to its border where Orgrimmar's is blank parchment. A 0.58 hull shipped as a trace would be a guess in an artist's clothes. The realm's own `.zmp` is authoritative about 128x128 over a continent — the largest zone on Azeroth owns 169 cells, about 13x13, which is a 28-px block on a 256 mask. Either route would be a guess dressed as art. The feather is not: it is the mask the addon already asks for. + +## Stormwind, Ironforge and Darnassus drew nothing at all + +The city branch declines to stitch a city with no traced outline, and says so by name: *"Stormwind +/ Ironforge / Darnassus have no mask — avoid hard boxes."* `MapCityMask/` ships three, for +Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff and Undercity. So zooming into the Alliance capitals showed the zone's +own painting of them and never their own map. + +The worry is right and the remedy was already to hand. `PlaceBase` takes the outline and the edge +feather **in the same argument** — the city branch passes `MapCityMask\` as the `feather` — +so a city with no outline can go through the slot its outline would have used. A feather is the +answer to a hard box. The three capitals now draw, blended into their zone: captured at zoom 30, +Stormwind's districts, harbour and Valley of Heroes, feathered into Elwynn. + +### The traced outline was attempted and rejected, with a number + +A city mask is "where the sheet has content, not blank parchment", which separates far better than +sea-against-land does — and unlike that case there are **three shipped masks to validate +against**, which makes it a fitting problem rather than a guess. So it was fitted: local-contrast +detail, threshold, close at quarter scale, largest connected blob, holes filled, dilate, blur, +swept over threshold x closing x blur. + +The best it reached was **IoU 0.58** against the three traced masks, and the failure is not in the +number — it swallows the sheet's own torn frame and decorative corner, because a city sheet is +busy right out to its border where Orgrimmar's is mostly blank parchment. A 0.58 hull shipped as +if it were a trace would be a guess wearing an artist's clothes. The feather claims nothing it +cannot show.
