ui_aura: another unit's aura durations, learned from the GO that applies them
The target frame's debuff icons had no countdown. libdebuff was tracking fine — the probe run said `libdebuff guids: 2` after a fight, and the AURA_CAST_ON_OTHER events carried the right lengths (spell 772 Rend, dur 9000) — because the timers pfUI-for-ClassicAPI draws do not come through libdebuff at all. Its unit frames read duration/expirationTime straight off C_UnitAuras.UnitAuraBySlot (api/unitframes.lua:1680,1788), and libdebuff's own header says the plumbing "now runs on ClassicAPI's C_UnitAuras (which provides sourceUnit/sourceGUID and non-player expirationTime)". So the number came from us, and we answered 0 for every unit but the player. There is no packet to answer from: SMSG_UPDATE_AURA_DURATION is self-only, and SMSG_SET_EXTRA_AURA_INFO — which carries a caster's durations on others — is a 2.0 opcode this protocol does not have. Hence every vanilla duration addon keeping its own table. This is that table, kept client-side instead, because this client *is* the client: SMSG_SPELL_GO names the spell and its hit list, so the apply instant is the packet's own arrival rather than a combat-log line somebody has to parse, and every reader of the aura lists gets the timer at once instead of each inventing a tracker. Keyed by (guid, spell) so a re-cast refreshes in place and a recycled slot cannot inherit a stale stamp. Length comes from the same ui_cast_events::aura_duration_ms behind nampower's arg8 and GetSpellDuration, so the three cannot disagree, and its 0 — permanent, no SpellDuration.dbc row, or a combo-point/level-scaled one — stamps nothing: a timerless icon beats one counting to the wrong moment. The join is driven by the unit's own UNIT_FIELD_AURA, so a stamp for an aura the target resisted is never read, and a run-out stamp reports nothing rather than a negative remainder. Not covered, by construction: an aura already on a unit before we streamed it, and one applied out of our range. No GO, no timer — which is what the mods this stands in for also do. Lua getters answer the reference's miss shapes; tooltip setters' flag (#1030)
Lua bindings answer the reference's shapes on misses, bad indices and tooltips: - Indexed getters push their full miss tuple (`GetCraftInfo`, `GetPetActionInfo`, the trainer requirements and others). Indices go through `ftol` and an unsigned compare, so a negative misses instead of raising. Verified slot readers keep their own raises (`IsInventoryItemLocked`, `0x4c8520`). - The eight GameTooltip setters return the builder's refresh flag, gated as `0x53267c` gates it, so a hovered cooldown tooltip refreshes. `LOCKED` follows the item object (`0x52bdb3`). - Quality goes through the InventoryType gate (-1), and a pending template shows the question-mark icon. - `GetLootSlotInfo` returns four values. `SetSpell`, `CreateMacro`, `JoinChannelByName`, `GetQuestReward` and the shapeshift and trade-skill filters raise or answer as the reference does. - The shape gate probes each getter's miss legs through an argument ladder. The host's clock, zone texts, game clock and error-handler slot leave _G, and the getters over them answer the reference's shapes (#580)
The host's state leaves `_G`: the eleven `__benilla_*` globals, which any addon could read and overwrite, move into the host's model (and, for the error handler, the Lua registry, as the reference keeps it), and the getters over them are Rust bindings answering the reference's shapes. - `GetTime` returns one number (`0x515ea0`), and `GetGameTime` returns hour then minute (`0x515ee0`). The tick advances the model clock, and every cooldown and buff reader reads it. - `GetZoneText`, `GetRealZoneText`, `GetSubZoneText` and `GetMinimapZoneText` always answer a string, `""` when unset (`0x48a0a0`-`0x48a100`). `GetZonePVPInfo` answers three values (`0x48d540`). - `seterrorhandler`/`geterrorhandler` work over a registry slot that starts empty, as the reference's does (`0x7039e0`, `0x702950`, `0x702900`). A non-function raises `Usage: seterrorhandler(errfunc)`. The engine dispatches caught errors through the slot, not through the global (`0x703b40`). The stock `BasicControls.xml` installs `_ERRORMESSAGE` before any addon, so play is unchanged. - The engine's surface allowlist now holds only `_G`. `scripts/api-coverage.sh` no longer excuses `__` names. Verified: - New tests show each of the eleven names absent from `_G` and that writing it changes nothing. On main, `__benilla_now = 0` rewound `GetTime` and every buff and cooldown. - The getter shapes and the error-handler slot are pinned. The surface gate fails when a name is re-added. - `scripts/gates.sh` and `scripts/smoke.sh` are green. - A live run read the clock, zone texts, PvP info and game time, then showed that writing the old names changes nothing. Built on macOS; no platform seam touched. Fixes #576 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

The VM speaks 1.12 alone: the Era globals and the uncalled hooks are gone, the engine's tooltip seams are Rust calls, strata/draw-layer/state-texture/sound/OnClick/quest-item/pickup take their 1.12 shapes, and the surface gate covers the production load (#573)
The Lua VM keeps no surface the 1.12.1 client lacks. - **Removed:** the nine Era-only globals: `UnitAura`, `CancelUnitBuff`, `GetCursorInfo`, `GetInventoryItemID`, `GetPlayerFacing`, `GetTradePartnerName`, `IsGossipOptionCoded`, `UnitIsAFK`, `UnitIsDND`. - **Hooks off Lua:** `GameTooltip:BenillaSetItemById` and `:BenillaGetTooltipOwner` are replaced by Rust-side calls. The uncalled `Benilla*` hooks are deleted. - **Frame strata:** `SetFrameStrata` knows the reference's eight strata and raises its message for any other (`0x774450`). - **`SetDrawLayer`** reads the layer name alone (`0x79a780`). - **`Set<State>Texture`** reads a number as a path (`0x781b23`); there is no colour form. - **`PlaySound`** names a kit and returns nothing (`0x4586d0`). `PlaySoundFile` returns one value (`0x458780`); benilla answers 1, a recorded deviation, since it plays after the call. - **`OnClick`** sets only `arg1` (`0x779540`). - **Quest getters:** `GetQuestItemInfo` and the quest-log reward and choice getters answer the reference's five values and its miss behaviour (`0x501f80`, `0x4e0b00`, `0x4e0cf0`). - **`PickupContainerItem`** returns nothing (`0x4f9b30`). - **Surface gates:** the bare VM's globals and every widget class's methods are held to `reference/1.12-globals.tsv` with one commented allowlist. A new gate on the full production load (core plus layer) allows beyond that only the layer's `Benilla`-prefixed globals. Verified: - A test per removal and per corrected form; a scripted undo of each fails its test. - Each gate fails on a re-added name. - `scripts/gates.sh` and `scripts/smoke.sh` are green. - A live run showed the same warnings and 0 script errors before and after. - In the 219-addon corpus, AckisRecipeList's bundled AceGUI-3.0 and Roid-Macros' Grid extension now behave as they do on 1.12.1. Built on macOS; no platform seam touched. Fixes #171 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Unit aura bindings resolve their token as 1.12.1 does, so mouseover, party1target and any casing read the unit they name (#497)
`UnitBuff`, `UnitDebuff`, `UnitAura`, `CancelUnitBuff` and the tooltip's `SetUnitBuff`/`SetUnitDebuff` now resolve their unit token as 1.12.1's `0x515970` does before reading any aura, so `mouseover`, `party1target`, `raid3target`, `pettarget`, `targettargettarget` and any casing (`"PLAYER"`) answer for the unit they name, where before they answered nil. - The resolver matches the nine base names as prefixes in the reference's order, folding ASCII case (`SStrCmpI 0x64a4c0`), with `npc` whole; the number after `party`/`raid` wraps at 32 bits and counts from 1; `mouseover` counts only while the unit is loaded (`0x515bd2`); each `target` suffix hops to that unit's `UNIT_FIELD_TARGET` (`0x5159d3`-`0x515a2c`); a name none of the nine match raises `Unknown unit name: %s` (`0x515c14`), before any index check, as `UnitBuff` calls it at `0x519542`. - The VM holds one aura list per guid, plus the player's own in cache order (`0xbc6040`); any token naming the player reads that list, so its order and durations are unchanged. - The feed builds lists only for guids some token can name, through the existing per-guid cache. `UNIT_AURA` fires for the same tokens as before. Comments in benilla-ui: one line of fact each, no history, no record numbers (#143)
Part of #41: the comments of `benilla-ui` (the Lua UI engine, its FrameXML loader and its widgets) are rewritten to the rule in `docs/METHOD.md`, which is what the code does and the reference fact behind it, in a line. 43,140 comment lines become 15,161. - **The mechanical strip.** The citations that were only a private record number go first, and each edit is shown to be a pure removal. - **Wrong facts corrected.** The rewrite corrects the comments that stated wrong facts. Among them: - `0x64a480` is the case-sensitive compare (a byte `repz cmpsb`), and `0x64a4c0` the case-insensitive one. - A frame's id sits at `+0xb0`, not `+0xb4`. `EnableKeyboard`/`IsKeyboardEnabled` are `0x776ec0`/`0x776f90`. - A region's unpinned edge has no fallback to its owner's rect: the owner supplies only the scale. - `$parent` expands to the nearest named ancestor, or "Top" when none is named (`0x76c5b0`), not simply to the parent. - A StatusBar fills from its internal normalised fraction, not from `GetValue()`. - The addresses of `StartDuel` and `StartDuelUnit` were swapped. - Many "untraced" notes now give the traced reference fact: the drag threshold, the per-grip sizing edges, the empty-`autoFocus` skip, and `SetTexCoordModifiesRect`'s default. - Stock FrameXML line citations are checked against the stock 1.12 files and corrected. `ref-` file names become the stock file names. - **Deviation labels.** "Deviation:" now marks only a choice with a reason. A surface that exists only for the retired Era addon target says so plainly: it is not 1.12. - **Verification.** Every file strips to identical code, and `cargo fmt --check` is clean. Nine second readers compared every file old against new, restored the facts the rewrite had dropped, and checked each new citation against the code, the stock files, vmangos and the reference. Behaviour differences the rewrite surfaced are filed as their own issues (#131–#142), and more are being validated. The comments here state what the code does. String literals are untouched; they are #92. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

comments cite the reference by address, not by private note (#30)
Comments that pointed into the maintainer's private reverse-engineering notes (a note by name, a path, a section or finding id, the analysis's own name for a client function, a process word) now carry the fact itself, cited by the reference client's address, by vmangos file and line, or as "the reference". Nobody outside could follow those pointers. Comment text only, plus the test-assert and log strings that carried the same pointers. No claim changes: a comment the notes have since corrected keeps its wording here, and correcting it is separate work. The two reference generators, `scripts/gen-reference-globals.py` and `scripts/gen-reference-verb-events.py`, named the private notes' layout to find their inputs. They now take the input files as arguments (`--capture`, `--framexml`, `--names`, `--extents`, `--disasm`). Run on the same inputs, both write the committed tables row for row; only the two header lines that named the old environment variable change. Checked per file: - the code is identical: each file with its comments stripped compares equal before and after; a changed string literal is compared under a mask that proves only literal text moved and every literal kept its line count; - no client address the old text cited was dropped; - a second reviewer checked every added address against its derivation; - a detector for the notes' names, paths, ids, function names and process words finds none left; - `scripts/gates.sh` is green. a fresh clone gets the whole project, and the maintainer's tooling moves out
What a clone lacked: the gates went green with a thousand skipped tests and said nothing, every login script assumed a worktree-pool slot and its probe account, the client defaulted to the maintainer's account, a docker path and a home directory were in the code, the temp files broke on GNU coreutils, and two generators could only run against a sibling repo. Now the test gates print how many data-gated tests skipped and why; a scripted run logs in as the account its checkout declares in `.probe-identity` or as the three variables name, never a default, and the client refuses a scripted login on any other account; the event and message tables regenerate from vendored inputs, byte for byte; the docs state the real prerequisites. Out of the tree, into the maintainer's own tooling: the worktree pool, its hooks, the perf leg runner, the cross-platform compile and the Vulkan container leg — a way of working, and setups not every machine has. One hook stays: no writes into the install. Two tests that could never run are gone with their subject: the quest-timer geometry diff compared a copy of the window that no longer exists (and joined a chain path onto a folder, so it always skipped), and the FrameXML flag gate now reads the stock files off the player's own patch chain instead of an extracted folder only one machine had. plate text settles, mobs stop sinking, and select goes with Lua 5.1
- a nameplate's name and level stop popping a pixel every other step as the plate slides, and the whole plate no longer jumps 19 px to the top of the screen on a rounding tie; the chat bubble takes the same fix (2172) - creatures and other players stop sinking through the ground while the world is still streaming in, where a Stormwind patroller had been 31 yd under its street: a body our world cannot yet answer for holds the server's pose (2174) - select and the string metatable are gone, as in 1.12's Lua 5.0: pfUI's heal prediction parses its messages with the right format, BuffCheck2's own select wins its fallback, and a method call on a string raises the reference's own error (2171) - the camera's water collision comes back out for now: with the pivot a hair under the plane, a surface swimmer's camera snapped in and out against the waterline, so the boom ignores water again (2173) Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

the unit frames are the reference's own, and the water has motes in it
- the player, party, target and pet frames are the reference's own files (`BuffFrame`, `UnitFrame`, `CombatFeedback`, `PlayerFrame`, `PartyFrame`, `TargetFrame`, `PetFrame`, in the reference's toc order) — our 2741-line `UnitFrames.xml` and our `PartyFrame.xml` are deleted; four engine verbs built for them (`PartialPlayTime`, `NoPlayTime`, `UnitPlayerControlled`, `UnitIsCivilian`, each answering 1/nil), the whole-UI load bracketed in the counted sound-suppression scope `0x48fbf0` self-brackets (the reference fires a `PlaySound` during load and throws it away), and `GetBillingTimeRested` read off `SMSG_AUTH_RESPONSE`'s third billing field rather than hardcoded; the differences the stock files bring are pinned rather than papered — `PlayerFrame` never hides, an unresolved name is BLANK not "Unknown", the target frame has no numerals at all (a bar hover pops the unit tooltip instead) - what the swap surfaced, each a hard break under the stock files: `UnitBuff`/`UnitDebuff` returned the Classic Era ten-value tuple, name first, where 1.12 returns two and three values TEXTURE first (`0x519500`/`0x5198f0`) — a raise twice per `UNIT_AURA` on any debuffed target, and all 184 corpus call sites bind the 1.12 shape; the power events are named per resource (`UNIT_MANA`/`RAGE`/`FOCUS`/`ENERGY`/`HAPPINESS` and their MAX twins) and we fired the Era pair, so no mana, rage or energy bar could live-update; `SetRaidTarget` is the engine verb and `SetRaidTargetIcon` the FrameXML toggle wrapper — we had registered the wrapper's name on the engine's body, so every raid mark in the unit popup raised - the underwater drift cloud: the reference draws a fixed 4000-mote field whenever the camera eye is inside a liquid — not a particle system, nothing spawns, ages or dies; a population scattered once into a 30 yd camera-relative cube, advected by the camera's own motion plus a gust and wrapped, so the field stands still in the world; benilla had the murk and nothing in it; a dry frame commits no draw, and the submerged one is bounded by the reference's own 666-quad cap (633–644 of 4000 measured live, which is the expected survivor count of a uniform cube through the 90° cone — an independent check on population, distribution and cone at once) Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

the addon arc: the AddOns folder opens
- benilla loads real 1.12 addons from Interface/AddOns — TOC, XML and Lua through one loader, with per-addon saved variables, Bindings.xml and the lifecycle events addons expect - both AddOns screens are in: the character-select list with per-addon enable state, and the ESC menu's in-game list - the API surface is measured, not guessed — a corpus harness runs hundreds of real 1.12 addons and ranks exactly which globals, templates and verbs they demand - the Lua dialect is the client's own, read off the binary — 5.0 semantics with the 1.12 additions, and UI source files are bytes, not UTF-8 Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |
