How to donate to OctoWoW with Bitcoin, even if you've never touched crypto before
So you want to donate, the shop has given you a scary-looking Bitcoin address, and you've never owned Bitcoin in your life.
Don't panic. You do not need to become a crypto trader, understand blockchains, buy a hardware wallet, or spend three nights watching guys on YouTube explain monetary theory.
You just need to buy a small amount of Bitcoin and send it to the address OctoWoW gives you.
For most people in the EU or USA, Kraken is probably the simplest option:
1. Create an account at Kraken
Go to Kraken and register.
2. Verify your account
Yes, Kraken will ask for identification.
More on the dreaded KYC below.
3. Add money
Deposit EUR, USD, or your local supported currency.
A bank transfer is usually the straightforward option. Depending on your country, Kraken may also offer cards or other payment methods.
4. Buy Bitcoin
Find Bitcoin (BTC) and buy approximately the amount you want to donate.
You do NOT need to buy an entire Bitcoin.
You can buy €10, €20, €50, or whatever amount you need.
5. Get your OctoWoW Bitcoin address
Go to the OctoWoW shop and select the Bitcoin donation option.
The shop will give you a Bitcoin address. It will look something like:
Code: Select all
bc1qxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx6. Send the Bitcoin
In Kraken:
Transfer → Withdraw → Bitcoin (BTC)
Paste the Bitcoin address OctoWoW gave you.
IMPORTANT: Select the normal Bitcoin / BTC network.
Do not randomly select another network because it looks cheaper.
Check the address again before confirming. Bitcoin transactions cannot simply be reversed if you send them to the wrong address.
Then press Withdraw / Send.
That's it.
Your transaction is sent to the Bitcoin network. Once OctoWoW detects the required confirmation(s), the donation should be credited.
Recommended beginner method: Kraken + EUR bank transfer
1. Make a Kraken account
2. Complete verification
3. Deposit EUR
4. Buy BTC
5. Copy the BTC address from the OctoWoW shop
6. Withdraw BTC to that address
Done.
Recommended beginner method: Kraken
Same procedure:
1. Register
2. Verify
3. Deposit USD
4. Buy BTC
5. Copy your OctoWoW BTC address
6. Withdraw BTC to it
IMPORTANT: Some instant purchase/deposit methods can temporarily prevent you from withdrawing the Bitcoin you just bought.
If Kraken says your BTC is temporarily locked from withdrawal, your Bitcoin has not disappeared. You may simply have to wait until the security hold expires.
Kraken works in many countries, but availability and payment methods depend on where you live.
If Kraken isn't available in your country, use a reputable Bitcoin exchange available locally.
The procedure is always basically the same:
Local currency → buy BTC → Withdraw BTC → paste OctoWoW address → send
You do NOT need to use Kraken specifically.
Hexler hears this one a lot.
There is an important distinction:
Bitcoin does not have KYC.
There is no Bitcoin company asking for your passport.
There is no Bitcoin account.
There is no Bitcoin registration.
There is no central Bitcoin authority approving your transaction.
Anyone can download a Bitcoin wallet, generate addresses, receive Bitcoin and send Bitcoin without asking Bitcoin for permission.
The KYC happens when you use a regulated company to turn fiat money such as EUR or USD into Bitcoin.
Why?
Because the exchange interfaces with the traditional banking system and is legally required in many jurisdictions to identify its customers.
Your bank also knows who you are. Your credit card company knows who you are. PayPal knows who you are.
So don't confuse:
"Kraken requires KYC"
with:
"Bitcoin requires KYC."
Bitcoin doesn't.
Once you actually hold Bitcoin in your own wallet, there is no Bitcoin registration office waiting behind a bush demanding your passport.
One important correction to another common myth, though: Bitcoin is not automatically anonymous. Transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain are public. Bitcoin addresses don't inherently contain your name, but transactions can sometimes be connected to identities, especially when regulated exchanges are involved.
So Bitcoin gives you something different from the banking system: the ability to hold and transfer money without needing a bank to execute the transaction for you. It does not magically make every transaction invisible.
For simply donating to OctoWoW: no.
You can buy Bitcoin on an exchange and withdraw it directly to the Bitcoin address generated by the OctoWoW shop. That's the easiest method for a first-time user.
If you later decide you actually want to own Bitcoin yourself, that's when things get more interesting.
Install a proper Bitcoin wallet, withdraw your BTC from the exchange to your own wallet, safely back up your recovery phrase, and congratulations:
Now you're holding the keys yourself instead of asking a company to hold your money for you.
But that's Bitcoin Lesson #2.
Hexler is only trying to get you through the donation screen alive.
1. BTC means Bitcoin.
If OctoWoW gives you a Bitcoin address, send BTC over the Bitcoin network unless the shop explicitly tells you otherwise.
2. Check the address.
Bitcoin transactions are irreversible - just like melting the face off of an alliance scum with a well placed Soul Fire. Check at least the beginning and end of the address after pasting it.
3. Account for the withdrawal fee.
Exchanges normally charge a small fee for sending Bitcoin. But its not much, and afaik, Octowow just gives u extra donation tokens if u send a tad extra btc to account for this.
Welcome to Bitcoin.
