You do not need to install any software to change your DNS server in Windows. You can simply change it in your network settings and use a public DNS provider such as Cloudflare or Google.
For example:
Cloudflare DNS:
* Preferred DNS: 1.1.1.1
* Alternate DNS: 1.0.0.1
Google DNS:
* Preferred DNS: 8.8.8.8
* Alternate DNS: 8.8.4.4
In Windows 11:
1. Open **Settings**.
2. Go to **Network & Internet**.
3. Select your active connection, either **Ethernet** or **Wi-Fi**.
4. Find **DNS server assignment** and click **Edit**.
5. Change it from **Automatic (DHCP)** to **Manual**.
6. Enable **IPv4**.
7. Enter the preferred and alternate DNS addresses you want to use.
8. Click **Save**.
This is generally safe and does not modify or damage your internet connection. You are simply choosing which DNS server your computer uses to translate website names such as `example.com` into IP addresses.
If you experience any problems, you can change the setting back to **Automatic (DHCP)** at any time.
Using Cloudflare or Google DNS can also sometimes solve problems where an ISP's DNS service is incorrectly blocking a website, failing to resolve a domain, or returning outdated DNS information.
After changing DNS, you can optionally open Command Prompt and run:
`ipconfig /flushdns`
This clears Windows' existing DNS cache so the new DNS settings are used immediately.
No VPN, third-party program, or other software is required.
