Open Source Launcher!

Perhaps our largest project to date (excluding the initial push to stand the server up in a semi stable way) is now complete. We are excited to announce that our OctoWoW Launcher is now open source! You can find it under the development menu on our main website. Please feel free to inspect, investigate, and improve it to your hearts content!

We only ask that if you make meaningful improvements to it, you attempt to submit an PR to request your changes get merged into the main branch to be distributed through our website. Also feel free to build your own version locally of course and use that if you would prefer not stick to a zero trust philosophy

One of our main hopes is that the community can modify the addons and mods section to be more functional, and to support users of all operating systems. There is also an amazing launcher icon in here (https://octowow.st/forum/viewtopic.php?t=135) that would be great to pull into the project officially. We saw it after a code freeze on the launcher while we were reviewing and couldn't pull it in ourselves yet.

Enjoy <3
Sincerely,

I am on Linux and this is my workaround:
1) add the launcher installer as a non-steam game
2) install the game using the default windows path it generates. This puts the files in the Proton layer created by Steam
3) navigate to the Proton layer folder for the installer in your steamapps. You should able to find the install location of the launcher there
4) change the launch path in Steam to point at the launcher's exe instead of the installer
5) use the launcher to install OctoWoW, which will also be installed in the same Proton layer as the launcher by default.

This is perfect but until we get native Linux support it's what we got. I have no performance issues doing it this way personally and I've been running it like this since day 1 of OctoWoW on a Linux Mint setup.

Here's what worked on Linux Mint:
Bottles -> new Bottle (gaming)
Runner: Soda 9.0.1 (default)
Download windows installer
Click "Launch Executable" select the installer
The installer ends and never runs the launcher.
Click add Shortcut
browse to: *whereeveryourbottleis*/drive_c/users/steamuser/Appdata/Local/Programs/Octolauncher/OctoLauncher.exe
If you don't know *whereeveryourbottleis*, you can click "Browse c:\ drive" in your bottle
Click ok, you now have the shortcut to the launcher in Bottles.
You can try to run, If it doesn't run, press the 3 dots and click "Change launch options"
in commandline args add: --disable-gpu

In order to speed up the install, download the torrent linked somewhere on the forums, put the contents in *whereeveryourbottleis*/drive_c/games/octowow/

Run the launcher from bottles, install the game to c:\games\octowow\
It will complete really fast because everything's already there
Under mods select dxvk

Oh the launcher "kinda" works for me, I just can't launch the game with it.

I installed the launcher with basic wine and it installed wow flawlessly, made mods etc as needed. But for some reason it's stuck in a "update" loop, meaning when there is changes (ie. i "accidentally" remove a ,mpq or ,exe to test), it checks files & downloads / installs all that is needed, but at least in wine it stays in UPDATE - loop for eternity.
After updating installation it just keeps re-checking and says the same over and over again.
Running the game through Steam & Proton-GE works like a dream though. Haven't tried that through steam method (running installer there & changing exe afterwards) though. Was just wondering that since you can extract the squashfs in .appimage, would it be too hard to reverse engineer the turtlewow linux client to use octowow servers. #wireshark etc.
