New in WoW and need honest feedback.

I know, that Forever is gonna release next month. But I wanna try the "real" experience, as far as I know, this server keep all the classic gameplay with some changes that expand the limit of the vanilla version.

All that I know from the game are all those hours I wasted watching hardcore wow clips from youtube. I wanna try the hardcore journey, maybe if it is my first time here, that would give it a lot of risk = reward for me. The question is:

This server will be online for long? (I know this is the successor of the other one)

Is not my first MMO (it was Lineage 2), the global chat is always funny to read, or even cringe, but do they can help me? or there is a guild that can do that? I may need ask a few things while I play.

Thanks for reading and have a nice weekend!

Unfortunately no one can answer this question. The dev team has taken precautions with hosting and the 8 knowledge keepers that have full backups of the DB / server code in the event one is compromised ( hence the term octo ). I have confidence in the team and I believe this server will be around for quite a while.

There are plenty of people that will pull your leg , but in general i've helped plenty of people asking questions in world and know others that do so as well. Anytime i've asked questions in world i've never a hard time getting PM's back with helpful answers. If you like a goofy world chat you'll find yourself at home here lol.

Hail Octo ,

First of all I love Octowow, and Mysteries of Azeroth is in my opinion the best iteration of World of Warcraft that's ever been made. That said, if you're looking for the "real" vanilla experience, this isn't it. I say that as someone that played back in vanilla, and Classic, etc etc. There are considerable class changes, balance changes, and content changes. Most of them are in line with vanilla, I'd say all of them really. It's more like an expanded slightly modernized vanilla. I'd say that it keeps the vast majority of the classic gameplay elements, but there are quite a few corners that get cut, there's a lot more quality of life, and if you want to experience the true vanilla game this isn't quite it. This is what the game should have become instead of the slop on retail.

This is a great server to do Hardcore on. I have played Hardcore on Blizzard servers, Turtle, and here. I think that Octo has the best balance across all of them. I don't like how Blizzards HC has such open ended trade. Any level can trade with any other level, the Auction House is enabled, etc etc. On Turtle you could only trade within a 5 level range, either above or below your level, and it had to be face to face trades. On Octo the same 5 level range exists but you can also do COD which makes cross faction trading a lot more accessible than it was on Turtle.

I mentioned class changes before, and in vanilla the balance for some classes and specs were pretty horrible. On Octowow I feel that pretty much every class and spec feels viable. On vanilla, doing HC, I'd very much warn against certain classes etc etc. Here you can try anything imo.

Yeah like the other fellow said no one can really say that with any certainty. I feel the same way about Blizzard servers though. I can't go back and play my original toon. I can't go back and play my Classic toon, maybe I could but the server it's on would be completely dead at this point. You typically get a year and a half out of a Blizzard server, and then either an expansion comes out or they shift to some other kind of content and your progress essentially resets. Each expansion is a hard reset. Some people would call my perspective here copium but for me that hard reset on each expansion is what killed my interest in WoW.

That said, Octowow does seem to have a decent plan for staying up long term. I played Turtle but I didn't immediately start here when Turtle shut down, Octo was a bit of an unknown at the time so I went and tried Bronzebeard on Ascension. Then Ascension got shut down and I figured I was probably done with private servers. I saw that Octo runs their team completely anonymously, uses anonymous hosting paid via bitcoin, and has plans for several core developers to each have backups and be able to get the server up if any of the other individual team members were caught up by Blizzards legal team. They also allow us to download our character data from the website. So they're transparent about the reality of private servers.

I would also say, that since WoW Forever *seems* to have a good reception so far, that they might relax going after the other private servers. Octowow also isn't nearly as large as Turtle was, or Ascension.

Global Chat here is a mixed bag. Some people are toxic, some people are extremely helpful. I'd say, if you do have a bad experience with it right off the bat, it isn't always like that. There are lots of guilds recruiting, some more new player friendly than others. ( See my forum signature, lol. )

The hardcore server on Octo is really great. People are helpful and friendly. World chat is funny and generally fun. I wish people used General chat in their zone more.

I'm not new to WoW, but I am new to tanking, and I tanked a dungeon for the first time last night. Everyone was nice and helpful. I think you would find that you would fit right in.

There are a lot of people, including myself, who have made this server their home. There's also a lot of other people like myself who cannot stand and will not play retail or Blizzard-operated media. Because of that, it is very unlikely that OctoWoW will be dead in any sense of the term in the future, especially when considering how beloved TurtleWoW was.

With that being said, I can almost guarantee that player activity will drop with Forever as there are many people who play more than one version of WoW, including retail servers. That does not mean that this server will not grow (in fact I expect it to grow possibly even more after Forever has been released for a couple months).
