Scythe of Elune - An elephant in the room

Dear Octowow staff

I'm writing this post for the sole purpose of pleading you to change how Scythe of Elune is obtained.

Scythe was a notorious item in Turtle WoW due to how impossibly random it was to obtain. A piece of gear that would literally make or break your dps. A trinket to rule all trinkets. A trinket that would literally keep you from being a high tier caster dps if you didn't obtain it.

It's actually insane that by far the best trinket in the game is obtained from a lowly Kara10, a dungeon that is hardly more difficult than UBRS. It throws the balance of the game out the window.

A single trinket should not overshadow all trinkets in the game, making it the choice for every single scenario and fight.

I'm pleading you, for the behalf of most of Turtle WoWs high ranking caster parsers, either change the Scythe to be a something like Atiesh where the acquisition of it doesn't completely rely on randomness, or just outright remove it.

The initial scythe item drops in K10 but the quest chain is huge and requires a lot more effort than what you're insinuating it to be. First off, the K10 drop chance for the quest item is slightly lower than the other legendary items from MC, and you can reliably farm it twice per week. Then it requires you to progress through all of K40 to complete the quest chain and equip it.

It's a legendary item with a legendary quest line and legendary effort to complete it. It's a great trinket for a reason, but not game breaking. Worth the effort put into obtaining it, but not mandatory. Like all aspects of this game, it's a dps enhancer, not a crutch for suboptimal gameplay.

What you want is a legendary item gained with the same effort put forth for an epic raid item, and that's not what this experience is, was, or should be.

The design for scythe is absolutely atrocious. It being absolute, undisputed bis whilst at the same time having it on a 2% drop chance means that if you're unlucky you're just never going to be optimal. I have farmed that shit every reset for 2 years without ever seeing it; any item that punishes bad luck THIS much is just horrible design. We're talking about shacking 5-10% of your total dps to a 2% dice that you can roll once every 5 days, it's just bad.

And if you think this trinket is 'not mandatory', you're just delusional. If you want to be competitive you MUST have it, it's just how it is. If you don't, you're 5-10% dps behind people who do. It's just bad design.

Its not mandatory. Just like thunderfury is not mandatory for tanking or atiesh for dps etc.

maybe we shouldn't even have such an item available that was first introduced in Legion expansion.

The Scythe of Elune was one of the worst-designed items in the gaming history. As Pastelpop points out, it became the best option for almost every caster, which meant that players who cared about performance felt forced to farm it. The problem was not that it required effort, but that months of effort could still lead to nothing because everything depended on luck.

It also created a toxic environment around K10. Highly geared players continued running content they had already outgrown, not because they enjoyed it or needed anything else, but because they were chasing one item. Groups were often built around Scythe reservations, loot competition and excluding other casters. Instead of encouraging cooperation, the item made other players feel like obstacles standing between you and the drop.

The legendary quest that followed did not fix this problem. A long and difficult quest can be a good way to reward dedication, but only when players have a reliable way to begin it. Locking the entire process behind a tiny drop chance meant that one player could start immediately while another could farm the raid for a year and never get the opportunity. That is not meaningful progression, it is simply a lottery.

The Scythe should not return in its original form. Making it easier to obtain would reduce some frustration, but it would still remain an item that invalidates almost every other caster trinket. Removing it would be healthier for both balance and the community. Players should compete through skill and progression, not through endless K10 farming and blind luck ;)

Dear Octo,

Please... the recipes for flasks are required for raiding and have a 1% drop chance and RNG
Please make sure every Alchemist with 300 gets them for free so no one can be behind!

Its legendary, drop rate is fine, its extremely good, because of so.
Change nothing from this

I've seen the Scythe drop twice on Octowow. I should buy a lottery ticket.

I don't think you and I could ever see eye to eye on much of anything if you're posting this as anything other than a positive.
