Please fix hunter's pet feeding

Why does it feel like I have to give my pet like 10x of a certain food just to make them content? And If I got AFK for a little while, they run away.

Feeding pets needs to be patched, especially at lower levels. I understand at higher levels you have to give your pet better quality food. But from like 10-25 or so I should be able to satisfy my pet with the basic innkeeper food at least.

When you feed a pet, give it one piece of food only of the appropriate level. Check the combat log, if the number of happiness shown is 35, then the food is good. Wait for those ticks in the combat log to finish and feed another piece after if the pet is not happy yet.

The feeding buff if essentially a HoT and needs to tick over time for full effect. Your pet will go from level 1 loyalty to level 2 in about 1-2 hours of playtime, at which point it'll start getting hungry less often as loyalty goes up.

This is working as intended. Your pet has 6 Tiers of friendship with you. As you become friendlier with your pet they will eat less. During that initial phase of taming a new pet the first hour is a bit annoying but if you feed it consistently during that period the Pet will tier up and require substantially less food. Once they're Tier 5/6 you barely need to feed them at all. Tier 1/2 are the rough Tiers.

Think of it this way, you just tricked a wild animal and its not too pleased about that. Feeding it yummy treats makes it trust you more. But if you stop feeding it right away, or heaven forbid let it get killed, that goodwill goes down the drain.

Yeah this seems like a skill issue, you need to make sure your food is high enough level, cooked food normally is always better then raw and after like rank 2 or 3 pet loyalty the pet doesn't even need to be fed that much unless he's constantly dying.
