Why not help?

First of all, this is just a post for reflection.

Just to make it clear, I've played and raided on Turtle WoW, and I've been playing WoW for 16 years. I got my paladin to level 6 and decided to do something I'd never done before: ask for 1 gold to buy some bags, since I only had a single 6-slot bag. I whispered more than 20 people until one of them finally replied and asked me to tell a joke. I said I was only asking for help with bags that it was basically an investment in another player. He ignored me.

Think about it, for a level 60 player, 1 gold is nothing. For me, though, that 1 gold to buy bags would have made a huge difference. Throughout my years playing WoW, I've helped plenty of people in every way I could.

So the question I keep asking myself is: why? Why not help? Why not encourage someone in some small way? Do people simply not care ? Or am I the odd one because I've always tried to help whenever I could?

To be honest, I was already losing the motivation to play, and now I'm not going to play anymore. because The server isn't nearly as populated as it used to be because of Ascension, and Blizzard is probably going to release some kind of Classic+ anyway.

I just wanted to get this off my chest. If even one person reads this and becomes a little more willing to help others, then writing this was worth my time.

Why did they ignore you? Because of your attitude. Your entitlement. You think they should give you gold. NEED to give you gold. And because of this slightest inconvenience of not instantly receiving free benefits you quit at level 6 after stating you were already losing interest after what... an hour of play time? They read you correctly and made the right call.

Hell, the one guy would have given it to you if you had reciprocated by typing a simple knock knock joke. But this was too much to ask. Why should you have to partake? Why can't he just give you what you want because you want it?

I had a lvl 10 or something player ask for gold the other day, i told the player no. I worked pretty hard to gain my gold after all, giving it away to random people is not something i want to do.

The player was just straight asking for gold without any reason given beyond being new. It seemed entiteled to me.

I definitely try to be nice to newbies but straight giving gold to any begger that asks? Sorry i don't do that.

There was another one a few more days back but he or she was more reasonable, and only asked if i had some spare silver.

In that case i did trade over a decent sum for a newbie player.

The main difference was that the second player was far more humble and didnt really seem to expect me to give them anything at all.

If this is the reason you quit, then take care. It seems a strange reason to me but shrugs.

Begging for gold is not something i've ever done, in the 22 years i've been playing this game. And i will admit i find gold beggars rather annoying.

Giving a sum to a newbie i like? Sure, thats another matter but people expecting it? Somewhat baffling.

If you give people what they want just off them asking, what incentive do they have to attain anything themselves? When does the cycle end helping complete strangers in this manner?

How others aren't willing to help you just off you asking, with no give or take, just take.

I help people all the time and never expect anything in return. if you help and then expect others do the same... then you are doing it for selfish reasons. Also go lvl and experience the game as it is intended. good riddance and don't let the door hit you on the way out you bum.

* 1 gold isn't "nothing" at any level.

* In the time it took you to beg in Stormwind you could have been just killing mobs or mining or whatever to make money + exp.

* Very few people actually just want 1 gold for bags or whatever, if someone gives you 1 gold you'll keep begging other people for more gold.

I gave someone 10 silver the other day to train a weapon skill so I have no problem helping people. But career beggars should be dealt with by a suspension or ban. It's essentially just scamming / taking advantage of nice people.
