A little perspective from the silent majority

I wanted to write this because I feel that there is something that is easy to forget when reading the forums:
The people who post here are not necessarily representative of the majority of players.

I consider myself part of what I would call the *silent majority*. I play the game, I enjoy it, and most of the time I have absolutely no reason to come to the forums. I'm just playing, having fun, enjoying the nostalgia, and appreciating the work that is being done.

So I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the developers and everyone involved in this project.

I know there are things that can be improved. Of course there are. Bugs, technical problems, balance issues, features that some people would like to see changed... That's completely normal, and constructive criticism is important for any project.

But lately, some of the discussions here feel like the developers are constantly being pressured to deliver more and more, as if every request were something they *owe* us.

I think it's worth taking a step back.

The developers are people too.
They are working within their own limitations, with constraints and difficulties that we as players don't necessarily see. We don't know everything that happens behind the scenes, how much time something takes to implement, what technical problems they have to deal with, or what compromises have to be made. And without even considering whatever personal circumstances they may be dealing with in their private lives.

And, especially in a project like this, which has grown from a community-driven effort, I think the attitude of *"I deserve this, why haven't you done it yet?"* is particularly unfair.

We are here because someone decided to put their time, knowledge and effort into creating something for us to enjoy. That doesn't mean we should stop giving feedback. It simply means that **we should remember to appreciate the work before demanding more of it.**

And that's why I wanted to share my own experience with the latest update.

The localization
First of all, I want to give a special thank you for the localization improvements.

I play the game in Spanish, and now the texts are actually displayed in the language I select in the launcher. This is a really important thing for me.

For me, playing this game in the language I played it in when I was a kid is a huge part of what makes the nostalgia so special. It's not just about understanding the text. Seeing the game completly in Spanish again brings back a part of the original experience.

My update problems
The update didn't go completely smoothly for me either, so I also wanted to share this in case it helps someone else.

My computer actually went to sleep while downloading the first patch. After waking it back up, the download resumed normally and continued showing the usual progress until it eventually finished. The launcher then showed the "Ready to Play" button, but when I tried to launch the game, I got an error along the lines of:

> "Cannot create file patch.MPQ because it already exists."

In my case, doing a full reinstall solved the problem completely.

So if anyone else gets something similar after an interrupted update, a full reinstall might be worth trying.

I also have an old laptop, and I've noticed that I get an error when I enable the DXVK mod. If I disable it, everything works fine.

The same happens with Nampower and the 1600x1200 mod. When I try to enable either of them, I get the usual:

> "DLL entry point returned an error (0).
> Make sure you have a compatible game client (1.6.1-1.12.1)."

If I disable those three mods, the game runs perfectly fine for me, including the updated record of the 25 quests.

Finally, I just wanted to say thank you again to the developers and to everyone contributing to this project.

It's very easy to focus on what is missing, what is broken, or what we would personally like to have next. But sometimes it's also worth looking at what we already have.

There is a great community growing around this project, and I think that's something worth protecting.

Thank you all for all your hard work. Thank you for keeping this project alive, and thank you to everyone in the community who contributes positively to it.

Some of us may not post very often, but we're here, we're playing, we're enjoying the game, and we're very grateful for what you're building. ❤️

How to I toggle disable/enable the DLL addon without octo launcher?
put the ddls next to wow.exe
vanillafixes detects other dlls and brings them together so have that working first
I try to rename the dll to dll1 and run WoW.exe, still autoloot is enable by default.
Is the default WoW.exe already pre-patched with the dll?
ACE.dll UnitXP_SP3.dll1 discord_game_sdk.dll
Data VanillaFixes.exe fmod.dll
DiscordOverlay.dll VanillaHelpers.dll1 ijl15.dll
DivxDecoder.dll VanillaMultiMonitorFix.dll1 nampower.dll1
Documentation VfPatcher.dll1 realmlist.wtf
Errors WDB transmogfix.dll1
Interface WTF unicows.dll
Logs WoW.exe zlib1.dll
SDL.dll d3d9.dll1
Scan.dll dbghelp.dll
EDIT: I have try running older version of WoW.exe with the latest client data and autoloot is enabled by default. So I can assume the DLL injection is hardcoded to the exe?

OK, fixed my 20 quest slots not showing. Didnt really have any problems, but the visual bug so did bit of digging. Downloaded the client from the torrent from the site, DELETED everything in DATA and replaced everything with the new torrrent data.

So seems it was some old MPQ that caused the problem and wiping everything clean, it runs now correctly on my linux install. Using vanillafixes.exe and running the launcher with the new torrent ability in linux is bit hit and miss. But the direct torrent works perfectly for updating the linux client.

I had a few startup issues after the update, but I quickly reinstalled the game and now everything works really well!

Great update, thank you so much dear Octo Team! <3

exactly mate.
the launcher applies binary tweaks to WoW.exe (FOV, far-clip, large-address flag, etc.).
you will need to write binary yourself which is arguably even easier with linux on-board tools than with windows. check out this portion of the launcher code, it tells you exactly what you need to write to which adresses (set 0x0c1ecf and 0x0c2b25 both to 74) https://octowow.st/git/OctoWoW/OctoLaun ... #L148-L156
ask AI if you struggle to accomplish that, if you accomplished it be sure to share your solution back to the community.

Got it running! :D

The trick is to disable the "dxvk" mod from the launcher, as it requires Vulkan video drivers which many of our video cards do not support at all (see plethora of errors like mine posted above).

I strongly recommend making this mod not enabled by default. So we don't lose players. Thanks.

P.S. Love the 25 quest log, that's a help.

... But it looks like you've removed world chat from this client? It is still present on the old client and people are trading there, but the patched game does not allow joining the World channel. Is this an intentional decision or an oversight?

Trading in chat is not the same as the ah at all, it that is the thinking...

edit: had to do a /join world to have it appear again. Don't remember having to do that before.

I consider it possible that you simply are not in full control of your computer and simply didn't install current graphics drivers correctly.
All nvidia and amd cards since 2016 support vulkan, all intel and amd onboard-gpus support vulkan since 2017.
If you use an older computer, it's not the playerbase that would benefit from making it disabled by default, it's you specifically and maybe a few more.

oh hey well newb tip: right click in chat on the "General" tab (the title of the tab, when it comes up after randomly clicking inside the chat box) and choose which channels are joined by default.
