How do I hide the new World Map icons?

Ever since the last update (haven't been on for a few weeks), these icons that weren't there before now show up on the World Map. I get that they're fine for some people, but I've been inviting new people over to the game who never played WoW before and I'd rather have it as a toggleable option. It kinda removes the feeling of discovery for them.
Is there some way to hide this stuff somehow or is it purely server-side?
