Names on the PvE Realm

I've heard from others that there is a shared name pool on the PvE and HC realm. My understanding is that if you have a character named Steve for example on the PvE realm and someone else has the name Steve on hardcore realm, then if you delete the character named Steve on the PvE realm with the intent to remake it into a different alt then you cannot use the same name anymore because it's now "reserved" for the HC character to cross over if they end up doing that.

Can anyone confirm? I have a name for a pet of mine that I want to keep but I'm scared that if I delete the level 1 character with the name that I won't be able to use the name on a different character that I create.

Yes names are linked between Hardcore <-> PvE as well as Hardcore <-> PvP. This means that, ideally, there would never be a name collision between the Hardcore realm and the realm they are being transferred to.
The issue you are describing was due to a bug we had in the cross realm name reservation when we added the PvP realm, allowing some people to create names that were already taken on another realm for a short period of time.

The underlying issue was fixed and the name reservation is working as intended, but there are still a handful of duplicate names that are on the HC server. This would get resolved when they die or transfer to a new realm, forcing a rename.

I encourage you to open a GM ticket with specifications so we can potentially get your name back to you.

Hi Archer, thank you for clarifying! In the event that this occurs, how best could we preserve our names? Would a screenshot of our character page containing a character with the name be sufficient enough to provide proof that we had the name on our accounts, or should we include more proof? Thanks for your time.
