Make the horde PVP ranks more horde-like

Post#1 » Sat Aug 08, 2026 12:18 am

A few of the current ranks for horde sound too alliance-like or too "formal" for a lack of a better word than what the horde feel like from an RP perspective.

For example, Sergeant, Senior Sergeant and First Sergeant all sound too formal and alliance-aligned to be properly aligned the horde's background.

What I propose is the following:

Current -> New
Scout -> no change
Grunt -> Sentry
Sergeant -> Grunt (most people stay at this rank and so an army full of grunts sounds much better than an army full of NCOs with no grunts)
Senior Sergeant -> Outrunner
First Sergeant -> Raider
Stone Guard -> no change
Blood Guard -> no change
Legionnaire -> Reaver
Centurion -> Slayer
Champion -> no change
Lieutenant General -> Battlemaster
General -> Warmonger
Warlord -> no change
High Warlord -> no change

I do like this. But I don't value my opinion too highly in this matter.

outrunner is more night elf sounding, sergeant should fill this rank.

Battlemaster is, unless I'm mistaken, the title given to the characters in charge of the entire battleground as far as the lore is concerned, so it would be odd for it to be such a low rank and for Battlemasters to be serving under other Battlemasters in general. If the goal is to make the ranks 'Hordier' then perhaps the goal should be to avoid trying to emulate a military hierarchy entirely? The Alliance has rigid ranks with graduating authority over others whereas the Horde is more about recognising a soldier's contributions by granting them greater prestige on the battlefield and command over others being restricted to only the most experienced and proven of their military.

My suggestion (Divided into neat subcategories for thematic effect) :
- (Rank and File Infantry)
Scout
Sentry
Grunt

- (Mounted Specialists)
Outrunner
Raider
Reaver

- (Elite Infantry)
Stone Guard
Blood Guard

- (Aspiring Heroes)
Gladiator
Challenger
Champion

- (Authority over the Battlefield)
Warmonger
Warlord
High Warlord

I like your suggestions. I didn't consider the battlemasters overseeing the BGs themselves and was thinking more from a "if I was making ranks for my zugling army, what would I use?"

I felt that sergeant and general sounded too alliance-like or formalized when the point of the horde was a ton of factions being united overall.
