Tweaks/Buffs on Priest Discipline Spec (PVE)

Hey there !

I was looking through Chronicles' raid data recently and found that Discipline Priest (more commonly known as "smite priest") is not popular and, funny enough, doesn't seem to deal much damage. Though I understand it's half a support class, I feel a lot of classes like Shammy gives more support to the team while still being relevant on the DPS meter.

While I play pala, I've always been interested in the Disci spec (I love the holy vibe) and decided to dig a little deeper on the subject.

Turtle did a great job at conceiving a fitting DPS spec to Discipline, but I felt it lacked some things that other specs got in recent-ish updates.

My main observation is that, while most other casters relying on spells that can crits are greatly rewarded with their crits (By having 200% dmg, having procs etc...), the only thing Disci got is an instant smite. Looks fair, said like that, but you usually got the talents "Divine Fury" to put your smite on a 2 sec cast time. That means your "instant smite", who would have taken 2sec to cast, is now instant BUT the catch is, you still get a full GCD afterwards, effectively reducing the cast time by 0.5 seconds. Strong in PVP, but on a dps side, only a theoretical 33% increase in damage from the proc.

But it gets worse, as I didnt include the spell haste you'll probably have at that point, reducing the relative effectiveness of crits proc even more. The more quckly you cast your smite, the less your instant cast is effective, reducing the effectiveness of having crits, and vice versa. And you get pretty fast to a point where you get close to the 1.5 cast time, as you got 3% haste in your talents, and even more while casting Chastise.

So, bad scaling with crit, bad scaling with haste, doesn't seem promising, but it gets worse.
I learnt that for a pvp balance purpose, there is an internal cooldown on the instant smite proc. I don't know the duration, but you can't get 2 instant smites in a row, reducing even more the effectiveness of crits.

Now that was the main problem, but there are some other specific issues like the fact that in order to get bonus spell power (the only relevant stat if I may), you either have to get Resurgent Shield (Implying you need to waste a gcd to get a temporary buff, with a clearly unreliable uptime) or Spiritual Guidance (deep in holy, and there aren't that much spirit in most of the good gear for dps).

Long story short: No reward, no scaling, and most people don't even now about the spec and think Disci priest are heals.

I think there's a lot of different things that could improve the global experience of a Disci player, and I'll put here a bunch of things that I thought about.

-Having a talent that reduces the GCD of Smite. An already existing talent or not, -0.5 sec or something like that would be more than enough to feel really rewarded by having an instant smite. I believe there is/was something similar in the Balance Druid path, though I could be mistaken. There's no reason Disci Priest could not have such an improvement, in my honest opinion.

-Having a way to reduce the GCD of the Power Word: Shield. Using Resurgent Shield sounds like a fun way to play, but you don't get enough back from the wasted GCD of the Shield, and that steals a bit of the fun. Additionally, it's a spell that is usually overlooked a lot.

-Eventually more spirit deep in the disci branch ? There's Intel and Casting speed, but adding spirit would be a way to get rewarded enough for going to Spiritual Guidance.

-I don't know about the pvp dampening, and if it's active or not on this server, but getting rid of the internal CD of Searing Light (while balancing back the dmg in pvp) could also feel good for PVE players.

-Quite a specific here, but I heard that Grace of the Sunwell (High elf Priest racial) doesn't feel good to use as Disci, as it does quite the same work as Chastise (while needing a FULL GCD, while chastise does not), improving the haste (which, stated earlier, isn't that much rewarding in the current state). I'd propose to make the spell GCD free while nerfing the buff a lot. I don't see much people using it in logs and stuff, and that's quite sad in my opinion.

While all those ideas would certainly make Disci A LOT STRONGER, I think adding at least the first suggestion (or something similar) would be the bare minimum to get the class way more rewarding to play.

Sorry for the long post, I hope my english isn't too bad and I wish you a very fun experience on the server ! :D

Thank you for reading !

(Do not hesitate to add sugestions, or to react to anything I've said. I'd be glad to be proven wrong! :) )

Smite DPS is Smite DPS. Discipline is Discipline. They differ. If you intend to go disc DPS, you go smite. If you go DPS, you dont give a shit about giving people shields (except rare cases). Its healer's job to take care of health. You also dont take care of dispels, its the healers job. Not DPS.

You need 10% haste to fit 4 smites (or 5? if memory serves well) in your +12%dmg buff, Holy Fire it was called iirc.
Helf is bis for smite DPS. Hard disagree with whoever said the racial feels bad on smite.
Smite DPS is very proc dependant and DPS can vary quite wildly. Consumables are extremely important.
As smite DPS you go into holy tree anyway, it's basically mandatory

This post reads as "smite has issues" and then u want to change the whole discipline tree. With all due respect, nonsense. You're also saying spellpower is "the only relevant stat", which just shows that you didn't dig into Smite at all. You disregarded the absolutely mandatory 10% haste and the value of crit, not even mentioning situational spellpen for mind controls (yes its a thing).

On top of that, you were browsing logs from the current MC/Onyxia phase. Smite is an insanely gear dependent spec, to the point where changing one item might result in you having to change 3 more. The current phase is not a good indicator at all of smite DPS, it only starts to shine after ZG/BWL/ES gets released. They also get a set in AQ.

I mained Smite Priest on Turtle WoW and I main it on Octo, too. I find this spec fun to play, maybe that's just my opinion. DPS is not as good as it could be.

Your observations on DPS according to Chronicles are correct. It's MC/Onyxia phase now and this spec is in second half (not the worst though). It's also worth noting that it deals less damage than Shadow which I find better supporting spec than Discipline due to mana restoration.

For context:

About some of your other observations...

Searing Light is indeed PvP oriented talent to allow some burst. Talent inspired by WotLK. It would be cool if Haste stat could also affect GCD so it becomes better in PvE.

Resurgent Shield - I think this one is useful only in PvP since it restores mana and effectively makes shield cheaper and better. I have always raided without it, I don't know how about other Priests. In my opinion, it's waste of talent points for raids. In PvP it's good.

Internal CD of Searing Light - on Turtle I thought it was neccessary because it was so good in PvP. But it was before dampening was added. Now with dampening my normal smite deals about 600 raw damage in PvP. It's not that much so this could be done without much harm I think.

I always raided with 31/20/0 so Discipline remains core. First rows of talents from Holy tree were also essential. Did you mean that Smite DPS should spend more talents in Holy tree?

And after Naxx and Kara40 come out, Smite goes to the bottom again. It was the case on Patchwerk and Kara40 logs. I was one of the few Priests that managed to collect 5/5 of T3.5 set of Smite on Turtle. 5/5 set bonus was strong and resulted in 100 DPS increase and even with it, I couldn't compete with Shadow Priests.
Is BWL phase then the only phase in which Shadow is worse than Smite?
The devil is in the detail.

If I understand correctly, you think that a dps spec shouldn't bother with bringing a bit of support if it gets rewarded for it. I'll disagree on that but I understand your point of view, my feeling is that there is a middle point between bothering with health and not. I just believe being more rewarded for using Resurgent Shield (the talent that gives you SP when your shield breaks) could be a fun way to play, but that's an option between many).

It's 4.
So, once you get to your haste cap, what do you go for ? Crits lose value as you get more haste, because procs only accelerate your rotation by fewer bits of time. It's a problem I adressed.
Being BIS doesn't change the feeling of having a full GCD to get some haste, haste that has a diminishing value the more you stack it. (IIRC)

And yeah you go to holy tree to get faster smite and stuff, didn't mention it but that's pretty obvious if you look the talent trees. I don't quite get the point but thank you for the reminder.

Obviously I wasn't clear enough with the fact that, all my suggestions are things that I don't see being added up on top of each other. I think that one or two of the things I suggered should be added (in a way). It's not about revamping the tree, it's about adding tweaks.

Again, great point with the haste thing, I didn't think about it. However, once you're there, what then ? The procs are underwhelming (do the math if you don't believe me, but a ~1.75 sec smite being converted to a 1.5 Smite, once you can fit 4 anyways, is really unrewarding) which makes the crits underwhelming. And there's still the internal cd. how about a crit that doesn't even proc the talent ? Feels good or not ?
The spellpen thing I never heard about it, isn't mind control juste a shadow thing ? You don't play smite dps to do support after all ! Just kidding, good point I guess but I hardly see how it addresses the "feeling good" point of the post.

Understandable, so it brings up another point: Isn't having to wait a few months before being able to do a bit of shining a bit of a problem ? Isn't making it so much gear dependant kind of a bad thing ? I mean, needing to change so much items once you get one doesn't seem promising.
Also, they already got a set on MC, and it's still not good.

I feel that you didn't address much of my concern on the class "feeling good to play", or about the bad synergy between stats, but I maybe wasn't too clear on that in the first place.

Thank you for your input ! Greatly appreciated :D

Yeah, that was an observation I made about Shadow, but didn't want to upset Shadow Priests as they have problems of their own I think.

Agreed on that, though adding a Haste scaling on GCD's might be too overpowered or just not classic-ish enough, but that's debattable. If you add it only on Smite Priest, that's gonna piss off other class and specs, and if you add it on everybody, that's gonna completely change the balance of things.

But yeah, reducing the GCD is the main solution in order to have crit procs feel good.

Understandable, hence my suggestion to make it better for PVE. However, it might be only intended to be used in PVP, and buffing it might unbalance the already good PVP spec that is Disci.

Yeah I think so too, wasn't sure about it though. If it feels bad for other players afterwards, devs could still nerf the dmg of smite even more.

Great intel, didn't know that. I think it might be due to the poor scaling once you got the haste cap and stuff, things I said in original post. That's why I think being too dependant on a specific gear is not a good thing, the spec should have a more smooth scaling with stats rather than having to get a specific gear to be relevant. And it could feel way better too with the GCD thing on smite.

Thanks a lot for your intel and for sharing your experience mate ! Hope you get a lotta fun again on Octo :D

Re: Tweaks/Buffs on Priest Discipline Spec (PVE)

I really agree on the initial point that the disci spec needs to get some changes and in my opinion even maybe a rework. I played Disci as off spec on Ambershire and now here on Octo, too.

My biggest complains would be that this spec feels like it doesnt really have an identity, for pure caster dps it is too weak in dmg, as a more supportive dps role like shadow priest or sub rogue it is strongly lacking in the support part and as a pure support, with what I would say would be fitting having it focus on shields/dmg midigation, the shields are just unusuable/very niche for the most part in pve at least to a degree where investing any point in a shield talent feels like a waste.

Suggestions for the current disci state:

The current support part of this spec is so lackluster to me, we have a spell dmg boost on only one target and a haste boost for just a few seconds on a longer cooldown, where you mostly just use it 2-4 times in the average raid boss encounter. For this, smite and holy fire could provide more support. For example, in addition to searing light your spell crits could provide group wide buffs, maybe some haste or spell damage or spell crit or even a shield for a percentage of dmg dealt. Some of these group buffs could also be provided by dealing damage with holy light (similar to the dmg buff we get from it). So a more case example, spell crits could give some haste % to your group and holy light dmg can give some spell dmg increase to your group. Or make the chastise buff group wide from the target you cast on (ofcourse at lesser value) and damaging the whole group for a bit of dmg in return.
I think changes like these dont need to much effort and could be a easy way to give disci priest a stronger dps support identity, since currently only providing "support" to two other players at max doesnt really seem to supportive to me.
Ofcourse there are probably better ideas and what not, but this is just to give a direction what could be changed.

The other part is the global cooldown of the instant smite after crit makes it feel so clunky to play - here I would love to get a reduction on the GCD similar to the fireblast talent of a fire mage and if that somehow would turn out to be too stong dmg wise, just reduce the instant smite dmg by a bit. I rather have here a more smoother gameplay experience than the clunkyness I feel right now. A little adjustment like this could have a big influence on the gamplay-feeling side of things.

Rework possibility:

This would need actual dev time and a vision how to implement it, so I wont make too many suggestions here, since it would blow this post way out of proportion, but I would like to give a directional idea to what spec identity disci could be changed to.
To adress it directly, I am very biased towards a pure support with shielding / dmg midigation class fantasy for disci priest with some single target healing possibilities, but clearly overall weaker healing as a holy priest. My best reference here would be the disci spec in WotLK, that spec to me was something else and so clear on a spec identity. Also dont come now with "this is vanilla, bla bla bla we dont need any changes bla". I am not saying copy it 1/1 but get some inspiration from it for the sake of a different heal/support playstyle for us, since shields/dmg midigation is already a part of the priest kit in vanilla but currently very uninspired and only with niche usage in pve, like shielding a mage once or twice a raid.
Maybe power word shield could be applyed group wide with a talent, where the main target getting full shield value and the other party members only a reduced X-percent amount.
Your heals/shields give a buff that reduces incoming dmg for a few %.
Your crit heals give a percentage amount of the healing done as a shield.
Reduce / remove the cooldown of PWS.
Reduce the GCD of PWS.
Bring in Penance as a single target healing spell further down in the disci tree (sorry I had to. I just love that skill :D).
I could go on but I think the idea is clear.

To summarize, I support and suggest the idea of giving disci priest a stonger identity be it more actual dps support oriented, a complete rework or just improving the flow of the gameplay with reducing the GDC of the searing light proc.

Don't look at Raw DPS alone, Enlightenment is going to boost someone else's DPS by quite a bit. It won't show up in the DPS meters, though.
