SamandClaude Fable 5.1 ef7140c294 an item on the cursor is a sale, and an animation's sound has a place
- right-clicking a vendor with an item on the cursor sells it: `0x5df5d0` asks `GetCursorItem` before anything else and a non-zero answer takes the arm to `CMSG_SELL_ITEM` instead of `CMSG_LIST_INVENTORY`, where benilla sent the list unconditionally — the whole stack, to the clicked vendor, with no merchant-window gate anywhere in the arm; the clear is `SetCursorItem(0, …)` rather than `ClearCursor`, which fires `CURSOR_UPDATE` and leaves the source slot greyed until the server's inventory update (1914); and the NPC you are talking to is not clickable: `0x5f0130` refuses a right-click on the NPC whose window is already open, against a global with exactly two writers — the interaction setter, whose fourteen callers are every one a window opener, and its clear — so the first click always gets through and no double-click is eaten, where benilla re-sent the arm's opcode on every click (1866)
- a Hated or Hostile questgiver's `!` now disappears, every `!` blinks off and back on when you resurrect, and the minimap no longer dots a corpse, your own pet or an untrackable unit: the sweep tears down on HOSTILITY, not on the flag — `0x5eb134` is a convergent block reached from two branches, so three incompatible readings had each seen one path — and an escort giver's `!` clearing with its flag is the field watch instead, which B257 now rests on; the dots gain `0x4eaa90`'s three preconditions (1906); the quest log's rebuild is all-or-nothing — the reference makes every rebuild a no-op until its template misses are answered, so a cold log shows empty and then lands in one step, never our `"..."` row per in-flight quest — sorted level then title, case-insensitively, with the `id == 0` group first under the reference's own "Missing header! (quest designers)"; and `GetQuestLogTitle`'s `isHeader`/`isCollapsed` answer 1/nil, not booleans
- an animation event has a place, not just a time: the M2 event kernel (`0x719370`) places each fired key through its bone, and benilla carried the when and the what and never the where, so every animation-event sound played at the model root — 149 of 244 `$DSL` records sit off their model's origin, out to 67.6 yd on `Maraudon_Waterfall01.m2` — and the point belongs to the record, not the tag, since 75 models author one tag twice; doodad, GameObject and shake sounds now sound where the key is (1904); and the unit dispatcher's arms do not agree about the point they are handed — footsteps and emotes at the event point (the footstep's material foley stays at the origin), `$TRD` at the origin, `$CSD` at attachment 17 rather than its head-mounted records, `$CSS` at the event point on a hit and attachment 1 on a miss — with `0x623b90`'s attachment-else-bias resolver transcribed table and all (1915)
- `GetSkillLineInfo` out of range answers the reference's thirteen-value tuple, numbers in the rank slots, not a single nil — the stock skill window adds two of those slots unguarded straight off `SetSelectedSkill(0)`, so one nil raises the moment it drives us; one shape serves every out-of-range case because the bounds test at `0x4d3675` is a single unsigned compare, and our source had asserted the opposite (1919); the outbound wire is traced by name (`out`, mirroring `in`), a line pushed only after a successful write — a 5-second visit to the Goldshire poster reads as 87 lines (1901); the binding shape gate seats a player and checks the `Unit*` verbs it had been skipping, coverage 220 → 249, all agreeing with the reference (1911); and a UI capture scenario opts the UI in itself instead of photographing a UI-less world and exiting 0, the opt-in answering `false` in a player build that has no harness

benilla

A from-scratch World of Warcraft 1.12.1 client in Rust and Bevy

Discord YouTube devlog License

Important

Issues and pull requests are closed here. benilla is a solo project developed in a private tree; this repo is its export, published as squashed snapshots, so a PR here has nothing to land on. The best way to contribute is to join the Discord and report the bugs you find. Questions and ideas are welcome in the same place.

benilla speaks the original 1.12.1 protocol, so it connects to any server the real client could, and reads its game data at runtime from your own 1.12.1 install. Every file format and the network protocol are implemented from scratch, with no original client code, no third-party WoW crates, and no bundled game assets.

What works

  • Formats: readers for the full asset stack (MPQ patch chain, BLP, DBC, ADT/WDT/WDL, M2, WMO), wired into Bevy as an asset source.
  • World: streamed terrain out to the horizon, portal-culled WMOs with interior lighting, doodads and ground clutter, swimmable liquids, sky and weather, and the client's own day/night lighting, fog and gamma passes.
  • Models: GPU-skinned M2s with the full animation controller, a near feature-complete particle system, ribbons, and animated gameobjects from doors to lifts.
  • Characters: customization end to end, the armor texture composite, weapons with sheathing and enchant glows, shapeshift forms, stealth and mounts.
  • Movement: a WoW-feel controller, networked movement in both directions, the server-granted modes from slow fall to roots, a follow camera with collision, boats, zeppelins and taxi flights.
  • Networking: SRP6 auth through world-session crypto, the object mirror into the ECS, and live wire coverage from movement and chat through spells, party, quests, mail, trade, vendors, bank, loot, the auction house and PvP honor.
  • UI: a from-scratch FrameXML + Lua engine driving the built-in interface, from the login and character screens through the full HUD, the classic windows (guild, macros and key bindings included), chat, nameplates, floating combat text and tooltips; third-party addons load from a benilla-config/AddOns/ folder beside the executable (partial: AtlasLoot and Bagnon run, see below).
  • Combat: melee on the faithful swing law, ranged and Auto Shot, casting with GCD and cooldowns, combo points, crowd control that really holds you, and the spell visual pipeline.
  • Audio: music, ambience and SFX under the client's own selection and crossfade rules, with interior and underwater transitions and zone reverb.

Where it's going

benilla is done when a 1.12.1 player can do everything here that they could in the original client, it looks and feels the same, and it runs from a download on Windows, Linux and macOS. No dates; the order is what is likely, not a promise.

  • Battlegrounds and meeting stones, then the long tail of small features that separates a working client from a finished one.
  • Addons, options and performance, ongoing.
  • The no-brainer fixes from VanillaFixes, SuperWoW and the like.
  • Playable downloads for Windows, Linux and macOS. Linux first.

Not planned: other expansions or client versions, Warden (anticheat).

Running it

You need a 1.12.1 (build 5875) client install for game data, a vanilla server to connect to, and stable Rust. Any 1.12.1 core works; vmangos is what development runs against, and cMaNGOS and the rest speak the same protocol.

WOW_DATA=/path/to/WoW/Data cargo run --release -p benilla

The server defaults to localhost:3724, the stock realmd auth port. Point WOW_HOST at any IP or hostname, appending the auth port if yours is remapped (WOW_HOST=play.example.com:5000). Credentials go in at the login screen, or set WOW_USER / WOW_PASS to skip it.

Early inspiration and file format guidance came from the wowemulation-dev community, and warcraft-rs in particular.

benilla is an independent fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Blizzard Entertainment. It ships no Blizzard content — no art, models, sounds, maps, MPQ contents or FrameXML; you provide your own legally obtained 1.12.1 client. The interface code under crates/benilla-app/assets/ui/ is ours, written to the client's own layout and API names so that the windows look right and 1.12.1 addons find the names they expect.
