Was fishing nerfed intentionally? (Trunks from floating wreckage)

On vanilla/classic the trunks found from fishing in floating wreckage or pools of fish felt really nice to get in the mid-levels ("Mithril Bound Trunk"). They would often contain green pieces of gear, precious gems, various profession recipes or other good general loot that you would sometimes find in chests in the area. For instance journeyman backpacks or troll-hide bags (both 14 slot bags). On octo it seems like this chance has been removed completely, with the only addition seemingly being a cooking recipe for a squid eel skewer and the only remaining goodies being potions, leathers and bolts of cloth.

I'm not sure if it was nerfed intentionally or due to a bug, but what I can say is that fishing doesn't feel nearly as rewarding with these changes and I'd personally suggest undoing the change if it was intentional and maybe even considering adding another even higher tier trunk to high-level zones so that fishing can remain something exciting even in the later stages of the game.

I'm not trying to be rude but I'm not sure your memory is accurate to be honest. I certainly don't remember it being like that, and when I look on WoWHead for Mithril Bound Trunk the one you specified there are no gems or recipes on its loot table, and the green drops are like 0.17% chance.

There are 14 slot bags in the Mithril Bound Trunks, but they're 0.13% chance to drop. Wowhead for example lists 35 found out of nearly 30,000. Compare that to Steel Lockbox at 0.7% and you're nearly five times more likely to see a 14 slot from the Lockbox than from the fishing container-- and I don't think they've ever felt common from Lockboxes either.

From my memory it was mostly just some crafting materials for other professions, and that's what the drop rates show. I do remember finding greens every now and then but it was few and far between. Mostly just crafting materials.

No worries no offense taken, it's quite understandable. When I said "often" I suppose it's fair to bring up that the individual chances on something was rather low, however what I meant was getting one of those additional goodies would happen frequent enough to feel like you're getting something "often". I'm basing my post on my memories of classic, vanilla was too long ago for me to remember much more than "yeah I remember it happening more than just a few times" but as for the ratio it's purely based on classic during which I was fishing quite a lot. Looking at the numbers you can find online there seem to be a few that claim somewhat different chances. I think a roughly 1-1.5% for a journeyman backpack could line up with my memory from classic, although I must say the troll-hide bag being significantly rarer honestly seems odd, because I remember finding not that many more journeyman backpacks compared to troll-hide bags.

Anyways, to get back to the main point: Now when I said it seems like it's nerfed I mean that it literally has not happened at all on octo over the course of multiple days of fishing, so either I'm insanely unlucky or the items simply aren't in the possible loot pool anymore. No gems, no green gear, no bags, neither of the recipes listed - Every single mithril bound trunk contained just cloth bolts, leather, silver coins, potions and the newly added recipe I mentioned before.

I also asked in world chat and while only one person responded to my question, they also said they felt like it wasn't giving its usual loot and that they had therefore stopped caring about fishing.

Thanks for the response!

Yeah I mean according to the loot table it has a 1% drop chance. From my experience with 1% drops, you can get a few back to back and then not see any for months lmao.

It's probably just RNG to be honest, but Classic might have also had slightly boosted rates compared to some of the vanilla data? That could be throwing it off or something. When considering stuff like this it's always worth keeping in mind that we are based off the old ass 1.12.1 client while Classic was a different beast altogether. If you look at what they did with D2:R with Rune drop rates being buffed I could see them having done that with Classic as well.
