I'm pretty sure this has already been addressed though, unless set rules are determined beforehand like an SR system it's all technically fair game.
This is exactly the problem is it not? This means that every time you want to play a dungeon, you need to explicitly tell everyone that PROT PALADINS queing as DPS should not NEED on a mail int+spell power over the holy pala (Just as an example on the context of this post. This applies to almost anything, like a warrior needing a bow over a hunter, tanks needing agility gear "because of armor", etc.) and they also have to agree to it everytime for it to work, and keep the screenshots saved everytime because otherwise gms don't care.
And what if someone disagrees with this for whatever reason? That they go "Hey, you know what, I don't like this guy I queued up into a group with is trying to insist on what can or can't be rolled on, I will roll whatever."

What do you do then?

That's the game we play here, filled with social assumptions. More of the time then not you won't have to deal with that or even if something is an upgrade they'll pass the item to somewhere more useful. But just like life things don't always go that way either due to cultural differences or general self-centeredness.

The irony of that is everyone in the replies either defend this kind of antisocial behavior and/or accept it as part of the "classic feels", gms included. Because yet again, nobody should care about the pants and i don't even know why so many people are focusing on it, the point of the post is to show that ninja looting is allowed which is a shame in my opinion.

The pants are besides the point!!!
You can roll need on ANYTHING and that's OKAY! This is a concerning fact when playing pugs!
Depending on the pants he was already wearing those could have been an upgrade, that's not off-spec.
Oh boy... I feel like the default position shouldn't be to play devil's advocate.
If you need to make lots of assumptions as to why such a spell/caster oriented item COULD be a viable roll for a PROT paladin who is running as DPS rolling for PROT when he is not currently in-role as PROT... lemme tell ya... you're playing devil's advocate!
Look beyond the pants! The problem isn't the pants... the problem is that this creates a dog-eats-dog world!
If people aren't mindful of others and you can get away with a "could-be, maybe" upgrade for yourself over a definite upgrade for your healer, soon enough you'll have a server where everyone rolls Need disregarding others for a marginal niche upgrade (that you need to justify because it's not even a main-spec roll)...
THE IDEAL SCENARIO as we've all probably experienced is the paladin letting others know in advance "Hey, I'm a prot pala playing as DPS, I'll be rolling need for tank even though I won't be playing if that's okay with everyone" or something along those lines.
Otherwise, I'm sorry to inform you that you're dying on the hill of defending ninjas...

I am the Quillshooter guy. I was also told by GM that ninja looting is not against rules here. By ninja looting I mean every player greeds an item and the last player needs to sell the item. Had this happen to me so many times and never made a big deal of it, but got annoyed at a guy stealing 3 blue BoE items in RFK so I reported to GM. GM said its a player dispute they don't get involved in and anyone can need on anything they feel like they need.

I guess other people are lucky but I have had a ton of runs with people that needed on items to sell after everyone else greeded. Eventually on my SM runs I would say "all need" on a blue boe and I ran Stormwrought and everyone needed on blue boe, no issues. So I ran RFK and needed item before thinking, 2 players greeded and then 1 other player needed and I can't remember what the last one did.

Now this caused a lot of argument over something that was really just miscommunication. Easy fix is for me or whoever won need roll to just hand over the item to highest roll. Unfortunately the players kicked me and had a meltdown before the issue could be resolved.

That led to a lot of argument on world chat about needing vs greeding and grabbing pitchforks. The problem with group loot is everyone is always at the mercy of ninja looters. GM have confirmed that its not against the rules and the only way to avoid it is to need on item yourself or form group yourself set loot rules and take screenshot/video.

The problem is almost every player needs gold or enchanters need to disenchant. I have run Crescent Grove where enchanter needed every green boe to disenchant. Is that fair? Is everyone hitting greed and a ninja looter hitting need for gold fair?

Anyway I haven't made the same mistake again. I make sure I don't hit greed but I don't hit need either. I noticed the ninja looters wait but when they see me also waiting to roll they hit greed (so far.) I hit greed and everyone is happy, which is how it should work. Personally I don't need BoE items unless someone else does, I don't think its PUGs job to save me gold. I greed and then offer to buy the item from the other player who won it.

You seem to still not grasp the fact those pants are equally good for all paladin specs and that it was not a ninja roll. At this point I'm starting to assume you're just being intellectually dishonest.

Teizertz wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2026 6:13 am So hit Need every time, unless someone says "don't ninja loot" and has a screenshot to back it up, because you are allowed!
Ok so first of all, those aren't healer pants. It's spell damage. There are greens with nearly double the healing power at that level range for example. Second of all, an upgrade is an upgrade. Paladin Tanks 100% utilize spell damage.

This genuinely sounds like you don't understand the game, and you tried to report someone for rolling need on an upgrade.

I feel that I've seen a few examples like this lately, and frankly you people need to understand what "ninja looting" is, and you don't. If something is an upgrade for someone, that's a hell of a lot different than this shit that you tried to spew here; "So hit Need every time".

Right, like you're so unaware of the game that you're actually just promoting people roll need on *everything* because someone rolled need on an upgrade.

Yeah people like *you* are why I tend to only group with my guild or friends.

You legitimately just don't understand that Prot paladins use spell power. It's a key stat for them. You are not playing Vanilla. Quit it with the Vanilla assumptions.

yea its bogus lol GM Don on pvp server said it was fine for a HEALER priest to roll and win the epic black morass caster dps trinket because "the player is able to equip it and you didn't specify beforehand that the trinket was only allowed for dps".

quit playing right then and there.
