Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 b17be2710f A repair the purse cannot cover is refused with the not-enough-money error, as in 1.12.1 (#443)
- A repair the purse cannot cover is refused as in 1.12.1: the not-enough-money error and its voice line, no repair sound, nothing sent; Repair All tests the worn gear alone
- Tidy three comments: the gift-wrap getter's reader, the repair-reset test's claim, the merchant module doc's width

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 98b0733013 contributing: what happens to a pull request after it is opened (#404)
A maintainer reviews it against the reference and usually finishes it on the contributor's branch
(a rebase, a fix, a test, a comment) rather than sending it back, so "Allow edits by maintainers"
stays ticked; it lands as one squash-merged commit with the contributor as its author, or, when
what lands would be mostly ours, as our own commit crediting them as co-author.

Docs only; no gate reads it.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 2306892ce9 ci: a pull request from a fork runs the no-install gates on Linux (#403)
The gates of scripts/gates.sh that need neither the install nor a display (fmt, clippy, the
workspace tests without an install, the doc-link and render-pass lints, the player build and its
tests), on ubuntu-latest, so a red pull request is seen before anyone builds it. A branch of this
repository skips the job: it runs the full chain before it lands. The job reads the repository
only, keeps no credentials in the checkout, pins its two actions by commit, drops debuginfo for
the runner's disk and caches dependencies. gates.sh and CONTRIBUTING say what runs where.

actionlint passes; the system packages are the ones CONTRIBUTING names for Linux. The workflow's
first run is a manual one on main once it lands.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 d8bafacc42 The pet sheet test says where a pet's defense comes from (#396)
One test message corrected. A pet's combat-stats snapshot carries no defense pair, because `UnitDefense("pet")` computes the pet's level × 5 itself (`CGUnit_C` `0x613680`). The message added in #391 said benilla had no pet defense, which is wrong.

Verified: the `ui_pet_doll` tests pass.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 7a1d799cf7 Comments and strings: the passes' leftovers, and a region's template matched as one name (#391)
The comment and string passes' last leftovers, and one lookup made to match the reference.

**Comments that stated a wrong reference fact**, now stating the right one:
- A cast failure clears the GCD, and a failed cooldown-on-event spell also drops its parked record (`0x6e73cc`).
- `SetUnit` is `0x505d70`; `0x476cb0` is the component clone it reaches.
- Interior sound follows the character, where the listener sits, not the camera.
- Template inheritance re-runs `LoadXML` on the one object against each template (`0x76985c`), and reads `name` and `id` from the instance alone (`0x769770`).
- On the ghost-to-alive edge the reference clears its corpse cache and sends nothing (`0x5ee990`, `0x491f50`).
- The name cache has no high-bit miss. An empty-name answer evicts the record in the reference (`0x55f6f0`).
- The combat-log deferred queue (`0xc4e208`) waits only on an item name. A unit name never waits.
- A flying spline's segments are paced by curve length (`0x454320`, `0x453760`), not by chord length.
- A stop within 3 yd of its stop point keeps the arrow nocked (`0x6019e4`).
- A missile's sound id is at `CMissile+0x40`.
- A nil or unresolved `AssistUnit` token is a gap against `0xb8` ERR_GENERIC_NO_TARGET, not a deviation.

**Strings:**
- Test, log and tool messages lose leftover history wording and placeholder labels.
- The extractor's scan summaries describe the current tint and sequence-clock paths.
- The smoke script's failure text carries no private numbers.

**Line continuations:** twelve log, panic and assert strings get back the `\` continuations they had lost. Each printed a run of spaces mid-message. Fixes #106.

**One lookup:** a region's `inherits=` is looked up as one verbatim name, matched case-insensitively (`0x6ee6f0`, `_strnicmp` at `0x6ee747`), as `framexml::expand` already did for frames. The gate before it split on commas and matched case-sensitively, so a texture or font string whose `inherits=` spelled its template in another case never received the template. `a_region_takes_a_mis_cased_template` fails before this change and passes after.

**Tests:** the quest tests stop loading three FrameXML files that no quest file uses.

**In game:** nothing changes for the stock UI. Log lines read as one sentence, and an addon texture that names its template in another case now gets it.

Verified with `scripts/check.sh` on the changed crates, plus the loader and quest tests with the install present.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 4510a9b284 Quests print their chat lines: accepted, completed, experience, money and items (#390)
Quests printed no chat lines: no "Quest accepted: …", "… completed.", "Experience gained: …" or "Received …". Nothing raised the reference's quest messages.

Fixes #69.

- **Accept** (`0x5ddd80`): a quest-log slot watcher raises "Quest accepted: <title>" when a slot gains a quest, or keeps its quest and loses the fail bit (`0x5dde17`-`0x5dde34`); a slot that swaps quests says nothing. An uncached quest prints when its record arrives. The QUESTADDED sound now comes from that message row.
- **Turn-in** (`0x5dc400`), in order: "<title> completed." only when the quest has no follow-up in its chain; "Experience gained: N." when the XP is non-zero; "Received …" with the paid coins from the COPPER/SILVER/GOLD globals; then one "Received item: [link]." per fixed reward, and one for the chosen reward, which the client remembers from `GetQuestReward` (`0x50161a`) because the packet does not carry it (vmangos `Player.cpp:14500`).
- Every line comes from the install's strings. A line whose quest or item record is still in flight waits for it; an unknown record is dropped.
- The money line joins only the paid coins ("1 Gold, 5 Copper"). The reference's separator test prints "1 Gold, , 5 Copper" when the middle coin is zero, a quirk not copied.

Tests: six new tests across the quest log, the turn-in handler and the line queue; `scripts/check.sh` is green.

To see it: accept a quest from any giver and read "Quest accepted: <title>"; turn it in and read the completed, experience, money and item lines.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 622f8ce525 A ghost is dead to the attack check, the action bar, the cast ladder and the cursor (#389)
A ghost could swing, got a lit action bar, a sword cursor over enemies, and an Attack button that did not refuse. benilla tested death as health 0 only, and a released ghost has health 1.

Fixes #246. Fixes #248. Fixes #250. Fixes #251.

- **One predicate** (`0x605f30`): dead or ghost is health 0 or below, or a player with the `PLAYER_FLAGS` ghost bit `0x10`. It lives on the object fields and every site uses it: the attack check (`0x612e10`), the usable walk's first check (`0x6e3dad`), summon, trade and the death screen.
- **#248:** the cast ladder refuses a dead or ghost caster with `SPELL_FAILED_CASTER_DEAD` and sends nothing, unless the spell's `Attributes` has `0x800000` (`0x6e4c49`-`0x6e4c68`); the Attack action button takes it first ("You are dead").
- **#251:** the sword cursor also needs a live, unmounted, unpacified player in control (`0x482648`-`0x4826cb`). A right-click now decides attack from the reference's CanInteract/CanAttack fork (`0x60c18c`-`0x60c247`), not from the cursor kind, so a ghost right-clicking a hostile NPC with a service flag selects it and does nothing else, instead of opening its window.

Tests: seven tests, each with a ghost at health 1; `scripts/check.sh` is green.

To see it: release spirit. The action bar stays grey; Attack Target reads "Can't attack while dead."; hovering a hostile mob shows the pointer; right-clicking a hostile vendor selects it and opens nothing.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 632ab88572 Party and raid roster lines and the join chime follow the reference's two stores (#388)
Party and raid join and leave lines, and the join chime, follow the reference: it composes them from two stores, the party slots and the raid roster, where benilla ran one ungated diff over the whole member list.

Fixes #264. Fixes #268. Fixes #269. Fixes #270.

- **Party lines** (`0x5e6a40`): join lines print only onto a group already held (an occupied slot, `0x5e6afb`, or a raid roster, `0x5e6b29`); forming a group as leader prints one line, for the member the list names last (`0x5e6c94`-`0x5e6cc1`); a raid list prints no party member lines (`0x5e6c01`, `0x5e6cd1`).
- **Raid lines** (`0x4ba5f0`, `0x4ba550`): arrivals print only onto a held roster (`0x4ba725`), departures from `0x4ba7a0`; "You have joined a raid group" when none was held (`0x4ba83a`), and "You have left the raid group" when a non-raid list ends a held raid (`0x4ba55f`).
- **Ending the group**: the leave acknowledgement, `SMSG_GROUP_UNINVITE` and `SMSG_GROUP_DESTROYED` empty the party slots first (`0x4e84a0`), so the empty list that follows names nobody.
- **The chime** (`igPlayerInviteAccept`): queued when a member is seated into no held group (`0x5e6dc6`) or joins a held party (`0x5e6c24`); a raid arrival plays nothing.

Tests: eight new tests fail on the old composition and pass now; `scripts/check.sh` is green.

To see it (two or more characters): accept a party invite and hear the chime, with no "joins the party." lines for members already there; `/leave` prints only "You leave the group."; convert a party of four to a raid and party members see only "You have joined a raid group".

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 1f77007977 Floating combat text words each outcome as the reference's emitter does (#387)
Floating combat text picks the wrong outcome word for mitigated hits, partly mitigated spell hits, damage-over-time ticks and one spell-miss code. Each now follows the reference's own emitter.

Fixes #42. Fixes #43. Fixes #89. Fixes #349.

- **Melee partials (#42):** tested resist (`0x629efd`), then block (`0x629f15`), then absorb (`0x629f30`); benilla tested absorb first.
- **Direct spell hits (#43):** a landed hit words its first partial as `0x62cd80` does: `SPELL_RESISTED`, else `SPELL_BLOCKED` (carrying the blocked amount), else `SPELL_ABSORBED`, else `SPELL_DAMAGE`; a zero-damage hit tests absorbed, blocked, resisted. The wider cause: benilla applied the direct words to every `SMSG_SPELLNONMELEEDAMAGELOG`. The reference's handler (`0x5e85e0`) sends split damage to `SPLIT_DAMAGE` (`0x62de60`) and a periodic log, gated on `CombatLogPeriodicSpells` (`0x62d9ae`), to the periodic emitter; the text now routes the same three ways.
- **Damage ticks (#89):** a landed tick words `RESIST`, else `ABSORB`, else `DAMAGE` (`0x628100`: `0x628354`, `0x62836c`, `0x62837f`); a zero-damage tick words `SPELL_ABSORBED`, else `SPELL_RESISTED`.
- **Spell-miss codes (#349):** the jump table at `0x62be10` sends code 10, 1 and 12 and up to `SPELL_MISSED` (`0x62bdc3`), and code 0 fires nothing.

Tests: six tests in `combat_log/text.rs`; the two over existing functions fail on the old code, and the new routing is covered by three more. `scripts/check.sh` is green.

To see it (Floating Combat Text on, "Show Damage Reduction" on): a damage-over-time tick now scrolls as damage, "-N", and a partly resisted tick as "N (M resisted)"; a partly resisted spell hit reads "300 (100 resisted)" instead of "-300".

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 3df3303d0e Every loot close deselects a dead unit, and a selection change closes the loot on the old target (#379)
Closing a loot window left the looted corpse targeted, and changing target left the old corpse's loot window open.

Fixes #238. Fixes #71.

- **One close routine** (`0x48f200`): every close (CloseLoot, the last row or the coins taken, the server's release response, stepping away) runs the same routine, then deselects the source when it is a unit or player with health 0 or below (`0x48f34f`-`0x48f369`). Before, only the movement close asked, and it keyed on the loot type rather than health. A skinned corpse now loses the selection; a live pick-pocket target keeps it.
- **A selection change closes the old target's loot** (`0x4936cc` → `0x493910` → `0x493974`): Tab, Esc, a click-off or the target's death sends the release before the new selection. A chest window survives a Tab.
- Declaring the loot drain's order against the target update also clears about ninety older undeclared schedule pairs, so the ceiling follows down.

Tests: four new or extended tests fail with the behaviours stubbed out and pass now; `scripts/check.sh` is green.

To see it: kill a mob, loot it and close the window: the target frame clears. Loot a corpse and press Tab with the window open: the window closes and the next mob is targeted.

One wire difference stays and is documented at the seam: when Tab closes a window on a dead target, the reference also sends a `CMSG_SET_SELECTION` of 0 before the new selection (`0x493a2a`). The server ends in the same state.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 73ec78c480 SendChatMessage sends a numbered channel's name, not its number (#377)
Typing into a numbered channel (`/1 hello`, or a line under a "[2. Trade]" header) sent nothing: the channel number went to the wire as the channel's name, so the server found no channel called "2".

Fixes #222.

- `SendChatMessage` reads a CHANNEL target the way 1.12.1 does (`0x49f4d9`-`0x49f4ea`): `SStrToInt` on the text, then the by-number slot getter (`0x49be50`), and the packet carries that slot's name (`0x49f70b`). A number that names no joined slot sends nothing, before the AFK clear and the tutorial acknowledge. There is no by-name leg, so an addon that passes a channel name sends nothing, as in 1.12.1.
- The binding keeps the target as Lua's `tostring` gives it, so 2.7 reads 2 instead of rounding to 3. `LeaveChannelByName` shares the parse and the getter.
- The send drains run before the zone-channel walk, so a `/N` resolves against the roster the script read the same frame.

Test: `a_channel_send_carries_the_numbered_slots_name` runs the real drain over a slot roster. It failed before (the wire target was "2") and passes now; holes, suspended slots, names and missing targets send nothing.

To see it: two characters of one faction in the same zone, both in General. On the first, `/1 hello`: the second now sees it.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 de0fa568d7 A stale useUiScale comment, and a usage line for doc-links.py (#376)
Two small fixes.

- `OptionsFrame.xml`: the comment on the missing Use UI Scale checkbox said benilla has no `useUiScale`. It is registered at "0" and never read, which is why the UI scale always applies.
- `scripts/doc-links.py`: `--help` and `-h` print the usage in the module doc instead of running the full `cargo doc` pass.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 4dc33b4afd Comments in benilla-protocol: the second read, citations on the pinned revision and restored facts (#375)
The second read of `benilla-protocol`'s comments, the last step #41 asked for: that crate's comments were rewritten to the rule before second readers existed. Four readers compared every file's comments against their state before the rewrite and against the code as it is now.

Fixes #41.

- **Citations.** vmangos line citations are re-pointed to the pinned revision: off-by-a-few lines (`Pet.cpp`, `Guild.cpp`, `Petition.cpp`, `LootHandler.cpp`, `ChatHandler.cpp`), and paths the rewrite dropped where a bare file name is ambiguous (`Server/Packets/Spell.cpp` against `Spells/Spell.cpp`, the two `Item.cpp`, `Group.cpp` and `Chat.cpp`). The gossip-hello citation is `NPCHandler.cpp:347`.
- **Facts restored.** The move-time-skipped chain (`0x603b40` → `0x601560` → `0x61ab90`), the addon-message TAB surviving vmangos's chat sanitizer, the zone-under-attack sender, `SMSG_ADDON_INFO` answering the auth session's addon block, the officer-note permission gate, and `SMSG_ITEM_COOLDOWN` on equipping an item with an on-use spell (the old text said a proc).
- **Deviation labels.** A label now carries its reason, or goes when the behaviour is only unbuilt (the survey window, the group XP bonus, the NPC-text language garble).
- **Two examples.** `park_probe` and `login_refusal_probe` took a hard-coded local account; they now read `WOW_USER` and `WOW_PASS`.
- **Verification.** Every file strips to identical code apart from the two examples; `cargo fmt --check` is clean.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 4f8350c9ed String literals and test names in benilla-app carry no record numbers (#368)
The strings pass for `benilla-app`, the last crate: string literals and test names lose the private record numbers and the workspace's words that a comment pass cannot touch.

Fixes #92. Fixes #36.

- **Messages.** About 230 assertion, panic, `expect` and log messages, printed tool labels, and comments inside embedded Lua fixtures drop their record numbers; the eight that named "the director" keep their fact in plain words. Stale claims in a few messages are corrected on the way (a cast-bar step, a font line, the every-shot recompute).
- **Names.** Seven test and helper names that carried a record number or "director" now say what they check. `git grep` found no other use of any of them.
- **Player files.** The key-bindings file's header and `config.toml`'s header each lose a record citation. Neither header is compared when the file is read back: the bindings reader skips every `#` line, and `config.toml`'s header is a TOML comment.
- **Fixtures.** Test fixtures use neutral character, account and frame names.
- **#36.** The quest-material test labels GameObject type 10 GOOBER (in 1.12, 3 is CHEST, 9 TEXT, 10 GOOBER); the code under test was already right, and the comments were fixed with the comment pass.
- **Verification.** With comments stripped and every literal's contents masked, each file is identical to main and keeps its literals' line counts, apart from the renamed functions and one rustfmt reflow. `cargo fmt --check` is clean.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 1d1f0a2c03 Comments in benilla-app, the glue screens, harness, settings and the rest: one line of fact each, no history, no record numbers (#365)
Part of #41: the last of five `benilla-app` pieces. This one is everything the others did not cover: the addon harness, the settings registry, the glue screens (login, realm list, character select and create), key bindings, the minimap, nameplates, the loading screen, transports, the performance instruments, the smaller modules, the integration tests, and the UI asset files (`OptionsFrame.xml`, `benilla.toc` and the rest). Their comments are rewritten to the rule in `docs/METHOD.md`, which is what the code does and the reference fact behind it, in a line. 27,351 comment lines become 11,010.

Fixes #33. Fixes #103.

- **The mechanical strip.** The citations that were only a private record number go first, and each edit is shown to be a pure removal.
- **Wrong facts corrected.** The rewrite corrects the comments that stated wrong facts. Among them:
  - The weapon trail's emissive is 0 (`0x70ca30`): the trail is a type-5 render record, so its ambient-only light term is exact.
  - The camera-style dropdown writes "1", "2", "0" (`UIOptionsFrame.lua:525,536,547`); several register-site addresses in the settings table are corrected.
  - The graphics settings are held until `RestartGx`, as in 1.12; `Fonts.xml`'s early load no longer carries a false reason.
  - vmangos sends a player-name invalidation after a rename (`CharacterHandler.cpp:839`), and the cinematic camera's announce packet has an empty handler there (`MiscHandler.cpp:919`).
  - Stock FrameXML and GlueXML line citations are checked against the stock 1.12 files, and vmangos line citations against the pinned revision.
- **Deviation labels.** "Deviation:" now marks only a choice with its recorded reason. Declining to copy a reference defect is stated plainly, and so is an unbuilt behaviour or an untraced one.
- **Verification.** Every file strips to identical code, apart from test literals in `login/`, `death/` and `ui_script/death_tests.rs` that now use placeholder account and character names, and `cargo fmt --check` is clean. Six second readers compared every file old against new, restored the facts the rewrite had dropped, and checked each new citation against the code, the stock files, vmangos and the reference.

A second commit corrects one comment in `benilla-ui` (`unit_is_grey`: the reference's exclusion is players only). A third lowers `ui_script_wall`'s ceiling from 45 to 40: five gameplay files named `UiScript` only in comments the rewrite removed, and the ratchet asks for the number to follow.

Behaviour differences the rewrite surfaced are filed as their own issues (#339 to #353 among them). String literals are untouched; they are #92.

- **The mechanical strip.** The citations that were only a private record number go first, and each edit is shown to be a pure removal.
- **Wrong facts corrected.** The rewrite corrects the comments that stated wrong facts. Among them:
  - The probes' run blocks pointed at tooling outside this repository; each now points at `docs/CONTRIBUTING.md`, "Running it unattended". The protocol examples show placeholders for an account's password.
  - The dismount kit's name-match string is `SpiritWolf (DONOTRENAME)` (`0x8627bc`); the stun and jump-start vocals are never dispatched, and jump-end finds no kit in the shipped data.
  - The cast bar's flash and fade step once per `OnUpdate` (`CastingBarFrame.lua:132-147`); there is no 30 Hz normalisation.
  - vmangos sends the OK cast result before the GO (`Spell.cpp:3681`, `:3715`), and a creature can levitate from a script (`boss_onyxia.cpp:679`).
  - A live unit whose model is not ready has a blank portrait in the reference (`0x519fcc`); the stand-in path is for a unit with no object.
  - Docs sitting on the wrong item, removed names, and vmangos line citations checked against the pinned revision.
- **Deviation labels.** "Deviation:" now marks only a choice with a reason. An unbuilt behaviour, or one whose reference side is untraced, says so plainly.
- **Verification.** Every file strips to identical code, apart from two test literals in `net.rs` that now use placeholder account names, and `cargo fmt --check` is clean. - The facing report is sent from the move-command drain (`0x615fc6`); `0x617100`/`0x617170` are the transport-GUID heartbeat.
  - vmangos turns a corpse into bones under the corpse's own guid (`Map.cpp:3608-3649`), and the bones get new flags and zeroed item slots.
  - Two claims about the item models are refuted by the shipped data: not every helm stem ships all sixteen race and sex files, and some item emitters sit under a keyed billboard chain.

- unit/bindings.rs: TargetByName's silent miss is a gap (#52), not a deviation; the reference's

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 409feeaf2a benilla-app ui_script tests: each checks what it claims, no dead probes (#306)
Test health in `benilla-app`'s `ui_script` tests, found while the crate's comments were rewritten. No shipped code changes.

- `every_texture_frame_outranks_its_status_bars` listed `ManaBar` twice, so its floor of 6 counted each mana pair twice. It checks the two bars of each texture frame once now, with a floor of 4.
- `the_unit_frames_publish_every_name_the_reference_declares` exempted the five `PlayerFrameGroupIndicator*` names, which the stock `PlayerFrame.xml` declares and the loader now builds. The exemption hid their loss and is gone.
- Two tests renamed for what they assert: `escape_closes_bag_and_panel_releases_loot_and_keeps_the_held_item` (ESC keeps the held item, as stock `ToggleGameMenu` has no `ClearCursor`) and `in_flight_roll_opens_without_a_name_or_icon`.
- Dead lines out: two `LOOT_UPDATE` fires (not a 1.12 event; nothing registers it), a read of a Lua global nothing sets, and a string table that the real `GlobalStrings.lua`, loaded right after, overwrote.
- Comments on the camera-style dropdown (`OptionsFrame.xml` and its test) now give 1.12's values as the stock dropdown writes them (`UIOptionsFrame.lua:525,536,547`): Smart 1, Always 2, Never 0. They are not a deviation.

The edited tests pass with the install present (82 run, none skipped) before the land gates.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 256e331582 benilla-ui: unused globals and queues removed, one true/nil helper, three tests that test their claim (#305)
Code health in `benilla-ui`, found while its comments were rewritten. No behaviour a player can see changes.

- **Unused globals and queues removed.**
  - The Rust `ChatFrame_OpenChat` and `ChatFrame_SendTell` queued text that nothing drained. The stock `ChatFrame.lua` defines both globals and replaces them when it loads, as the reference's FrameXML does.
  - `BenillaGetItemStats` had no Lua caller. Its test of the item cache's miss, ask and push now runs through `GetItemInfo`, which shares that path.
  - `UiScript::queue_social_request` had no caller.
- **One true/nil helper.** Seven modules each carried their own copy of `binding_abi::flag`, the reference's `1`-or-nil boolean. They call it now.
- **Three tests test their claim.**
  - `click_focuses_regardless_of_autofocus_…` built both boxes with autoFocus on. One is now off.
  - `level_shift_saturates_at_zero` never saturated. Its child now drops past 0.
  - The layout profiler's `plan` bucket was never set, so it always printed 0. It is gone.
- **Smaller fixes.** An empty `if buyback {}` branch is gone, and a doc comment no longer sits on a `use` line instead of on `install_justify`.

Checked with `cargo clippy -p benilla-ui --all-targets -D warnings` and `cargo test -p benilla-ui` (1513 passed) before the land gates.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 05ab92ce73 Comments in the UI XML and the Lua fork's manifest: no dead marker, no record number (#300)
Fixes #31. The last comments outside the Rust sources that carried a dead name or a private record number:

- `OptionsFrame.xml` and `SpellBookAdapters.xml` drop the `BENILLA_ALLOW_OWN_UI=1` marker, which no code or test reads.
- `third_party/lua-src/Cargo.toml` says why the fork exists without its record number, in plain case.

Comment text only: every file is identical with its comments stripped. The Rust test comments #31 also listed were rewritten with their crates' comment passes.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 9c32e5126e String literals in benilla-ui, -world and -formats carry no record numbers (#299)
Part of #92, for `benilla-ui`, `benilla-world` and `benilla-formats`.

- 88 string literals drop private record and bug numbers, the dates of private incidents, and the workspace's name for the maintainer. They are assert and panic texts, log and printout lines, the `--` comments of the Lua prelude and of test fixtures, and one Lua assert. Each keeps its fact in its own words.
- Two test names lose their numbers: `burning_steppes_lava_builds_a_magma_surface_at_the_reported_pin` and `join_channel_by_name_answers_the_row_custom_and_nil_legs`.
- A test-only event, `B271_PROBE`, is now `ERROR_PROBE` in the two crates that register and fire it. A fixture's error text in `benilla-app`'s `ui_script` tests drops its bug number, together with the assertion that reads it.
- Doc comments that named a client function by a disassembler's label (`FUN_0068a830`) now give its address, in `benilla-formats`, `benilla-assets` and one `benilla-app` file.
- Every literal change keeps each literal's line count, proven with comments stripped and every literal masked. The two renamed tests differ only in their names.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 715d6d91c9 String literals in benilla-assets, -blp, -protocol and -srp carry no record numbers (#291)
Part of #92, for the crates whose comment pass has landed and whose literals are few: `benilla-assets`, `benilla-blp`, `benilla-protocol` and `benilla-srp`.

- Assert messages, printed labels and a probe's error text drop their private record and bug numbers and the workspace's name for the maintainer. Each keeps its fact in its own words. One assert names a client function by its address, `0x68a830`, instead of a disassembler's label for it.
- Two terrain tests named after a bug number are renamed for what they check: `the_pin_stands_one_chunk_west_of_an_impassable_band` in `benilla-formats`, and `a_body_walking_east_from_the_pin_is_stopped_at_the_wall` in `benilla-world`. Those two crates' other literals follow in their own pass.
- Every change is to string-literal text, proven with comments stripped and every literal masked, except the two renamed tests.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 c04d74f47c Comments in benilla-assets and benilla-ui: three reference facts corrected, one deviation labelled (#290)
Comment corrections in crates whose comment pass has already landed. Comment text only: every file strips to identical code.

- Fixes #61. The `<Script file=>` note in `benilla-ui`'s loader now names the install directory as the reference's scan root (`0x646ea0`, from Storm's base path `0xc52418`), not the process's working directory. The deviation it records is unchanged.
- Fixes #96. `liquid.wgsl` no longer labels the ADT water alpha a deviation. The swatch's own alpha is what the reference uses: the `0xc7fbc0` table's texture binds only behind `[0xc800ec]`, which never holds one.
- Fixes #117. `wmo.rs` now gives prop creation as the streaming-window commit (`0x698720` → `0x695aa0`, once per group) and per-frame visibility as the portal walk's admission (`0x685d70` → `0x6838f0`).
- `model.rs`: the billboard-card normal flip carries the Deviation label, with the reason `benilla-formats` already gives where the test lives: the reference shades such a card inverted and camera-dependent.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 f48f32e741 vmangos citations read in one revision, vmangos core 6b34a36 (#289)
Fixes #32. Every vmangos `File.cpp:N` citation in the crates whose comments have been rewritten now reads in one revision, vmangos core `6b34a36`, the one the comments are written against, a few commits from the server benilla is run against. Some citations had been taken from a newer vmangos checkout, where the lines have moved. #32's own targets came from that newer checkout too, so where this PR and #32 differ, this PR follows `6b34a36`.

- 53 citations in 31 files are re-pointed: most in benilla-protocol, a few in benilla-ui and benilla-app. Each new line was read and is the construct its comment names.
- #32's cases:
  - The root-ack kick is `MovementHandler.cpp:715-722`; three comments cited the falling deferral after it.
  - Movement is discarded before `CMSG_SET_ACTIVE_MOVER` lands at `:291-293`, through `Player::GetConfirmedMover`.
  - The released mover's parting stop is `:955-964`.
  - The mount-special echo is sent with `self` false at `:972`. Whether the sender gets its own echo depends on the server's broadcaster (`Object.cpp:2273-2280`); that is stated once, where the packet is parsed, and the opcode comment points there.
- Ten more citations were a line or two off in every revision. One comment also stated a wrong fact: vmangos's ignoring-you party refusal names the invitee, and the empty name is the raid-convert confirmation's.
- Comment text only. Every file strips to identical code, and `cargo fmt --check` is clean.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 bd346db228 Record numbers out of the headers benilla writes into players' files (#285)
Part of #92. The headers benilla writes at the top of a player's saved-variables files and chat cache carried a private record number, so every player's own files held one. They now say only what the file is.

- The chat cache's repair marker is now `# benilla-writer 2`. The check is `contains`, so a file stamped with the longer marker still counts as repaired and is not re-seeded.
- The other record numbers in these four files' literals go too: one log line and five assert messages. So does one test name, now `one_line_rows_without_addedversion_still_parse`.
- Every change is to string-literal text, proven with comments stripped and every literal masked, except the renamed test.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 2f323ff0b3 Comments in benilla-app, the UI windows: one line of fact each, no history, no record numbers (#284)
Part of #41: the second of five `benilla-app` pieces. This one is the UI windows: chat, the NPC windows (gossip, merchant, trainer, taxi, bank, mail, auction, quest giver), the unit, party, raid and aura feeds, the action bar, bags, tooltips, macros, the spellbook, the world map and the smaller panels. Their comments are rewritten to the rule in `docs/METHOD.md`, which is what the code does and the reference fact behind it, in a line. 26,648 comment lines become 9,221.

Fixes #98.

- **The mechanical strip.** The citations that were only a private record number go first, and each edit is shown to be a pure removal.
- **Wrong facts corrected.** The rewrite corrects the comments that stated wrong facts. Among them:
  - Several client addresses carried a `0x400000` slip (`UPDATE_MACROS` is `0x852460`, not `0x452460`; the macro store's globals likewise).
  - `QUEST_WATCH_UPDATE` carries the quest-log row (`0x4df880` scans the log table at `0xbb71c0`), not a watch-list position.
  - The stock `ChatFrame_DisplayTimePlayed` now ships, so benilla's own `/played` lines duplicate it (#194); trainer refusals are logged, not shown on the error line; the player's cast result is `SMSG_CAST_RESULT`.
  - Stock FrameXML and `Blizzard_*` line citations are checked against the stock 1.12 files, and vmangos line citations against the vmangos revision nearest the one the local server runs.
  - Dozens more turned up on the way: docs sitting on the wrong item, removed functions, stale counts, broken intra-doc links.
  - One test comment in `ui_script/questlog_tests.rs`, which landed with #184, carried the same watch-index slip and gets the same fix.
- **Deviation labels.** "Deviation:" now marks only a choice with a reason. An unbuilt behaviour, or one whose reference side is untraced, says so plainly.
- **Verification.** Every file strips to identical code, and `cargo fmt --check` is clean. Six second readers compared every file old against new, restored the facts the rewrite had dropped, and checked each new citation against the code, the stock files, vmangos and the reference.

Behaviour differences the rewrite surfaced are filed as their own issues (#188, #204, #222 and #259 among them). The comments here state what the code does. String literals are untouched; they are #92.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 a2629b623d README: complete and playable, no prebuilt downloads, and servers, addons and settings as they are (#201)
The README now leads with the whole game being playable, keeps the two open fronts (the long
tail, and addons, options and performance), drops the downloads goal, and sends packaged builds
and server changes to forks, with GitHub's fork list linked.

Corrected against the code:
- A server that requires Warden is refused at the handshake (benilla-protocol
world/session.rs), so the README asks for Warden off; vmangos ships with it off
  (mangosd.conf.dist.in, Warden.WinEnabled and Warden.OSXEnabled default to 0).
- `cargo run` builds the default `dev` feature, which keeps benilla-config/ at the repo root
(benilla-app local_state.rs), so the addon folder is named there, not beside the binary.
- The named addons are the ones whose fixes landed: Questie (3e92b4f0), pfUI (0a3c0692),
  Bagnon (321bcbb3) and Bartender2 (a753a8b5).
- assets/ui holds adapters and the options, game menu, key bindings and script log windows
benilla draws itself; the options window and the ESC menu follow the Classic Era client.
- The client reports enUS and reads the enUS DBC columns, so the install asked for is English.

Kept after checking: no third-party WoW crates in any manifest; on Linux, Wayland and X11 load
at run time, so ALSA, udev and pkg-config are the whole build-time list; localhost:3724 is the
default; WOW_USER and WOW_PASS log in from a plain clone. Every link resolves.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 eba558a5d2 Comments in benilla-app, the UI script layer: one line of fact each, no history, no record numbers (#184)
Part of #41: the first of five `benilla-app` pieces. This one is the UI script layer: `ui_script` with its test harnesses, the text engine and layout (`ui_text`), the UI pass and the UI model panes. Its comments are rewritten to the rule in `docs/METHOD.md`, which is what the code does and the reference fact behind it, in a line. 22,041 comment lines become 7,133.

- **The mechanical strip.** The citations that were only a private record number go first, and each edit is shown to be a pure removal.
- **Wrong facts corrected.** The rewrite corrects the comments that stated wrong facts. Among them:
  - On a fresh login the reference fires `PLAYER_LOGIN` and `PLAYER_ENTERING_WORLD` from the player's create (`0x5deb60` → `0x4908c0`); only a `/reload` goes through `0x490168`. The comments now state both paths.
  - `ComputeStep` (`0x5ca2d0`) applies negative pair kerns and rounds up. It does have a kerning term.
  - A fallback icon global and the retired `UiPanels.xml` panels no longer exist. The comments that named them now describe the stock FrameXML mechanism that replaced them.
  - Stock FrameXML line citations are checked against the stock 1.12 files and corrected, and several misattributed files are fixed (`MainMenuBarArtFrame` lives in `MainMenuBar.xml`).
  - Dozens more turned up on the way: docs sitting on the wrong item, removed functions, stale counts and links.
- **Deviation labels.** "Deviation:" now marks only a choice with a reason. An unbuilt behaviour says so plainly.
- **Verification.** Every file strips to identical code, and `cargo fmt --check` is clean. Five second readers compared every file old against new, restored the facts the rewrite had dropped, and checked each new citation against the code, the stock files, vmangos and the reference.

Behaviour differences the rewrite surfaced are filed as their own issues (#183 among them). The comments here state what the code does. String literals are untouched; they are #92.

- **The mechanical strip.** The citations that were only a private record number go first, and each edit is shown to be a pure removal.
- **Wrong facts corrected.** The rewrite corrects the comments that stated wrong facts. Among them:
  - `0x64a480` is the case-sensitive compare (a byte `repz cmpsb`), and `0x64a4c0` the case-insensitive one.
  - A frame's id sits at `+0xb0`, not `+0xb4`. `EnableKeyboard`/`IsKeyboardEnabled` are `0x776ec0`/`0x776f90`.
  - A region's unpinned edge has no fallback to its owner's rect: the owner supplies only the scale.
  - `$parent` expands to the nearest named ancestor, or "Top" when none is named (`0x76c5b0`), not simply to the parent.
  - A StatusBar fills from its internal normalised fraction, not from `GetValue()`.
  - The addresses of `StartDuel` and `StartDuelUnit` were swapped.
  - Many "untraced" notes now give the traced reference fact: the drag threshold, the per-grip sizing edges, the empty-`autoFocus` skip, and `SetTexCoordModifiesRect`'s default.
  - Stock FrameXML line citations are checked against the stock 1.12 files and corrected. `ref-` file names become the stock file names.
- **Deviation labels.** "Deviation:" now marks only a choice with a reason. A surface that exists only for the retired Era addon target says so plainly: it is not 1.12.
- **Verification.** Every file strips to identical code, and `cargo fmt --check` is clean. Nine second readers compared every file old against new, restored the facts the rewrite had dropped, and checked each new citation against the code, the stock files, vmangos and the reference.

Behaviour differences the rewrite surfaced are filed as their own issues (#131–#142), and more are being validated. The comments here state what the code does. String literals are untouched; they are #92.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 8505187668 Comments in benilla-formats: one line of fact each, no history, no record numbers (#130)
Part of #41: the comments of `benilla-formats` (the library, its extract tools, examples and tests) are rewritten to the rule in `docs/METHOD.md`, which is what the code does and the reference fact behind it, in a line. 19,654 comment lines become 7,264.

Fixes #105: the WMO collision comments now name walking's box-query leaf `0x6bca50` and the camera and line-of-sight segment-query leaf `0x6bc700`, in `models/collision.rs`, `examples/wmo_bsp.rs` and `tests/chain.rs`.

- **The mechanical strip.** The citations that were only a private record number go first, and each edit is shown to be a pure removal.
- **Wrong facts corrected.** The rewrite corrects the comments that stated wrong facts. Among them:
  - A placed doodad's material alpha reads file slot 0 on its spawn clock, while the reference reads bone 0's armed sequence, re-rolled every play window. The old text said doodads are armed once at load.
  - The fog end is stored ×36 and scaled once at load (`0x6d6090`). It is not raw.
  - The MCSH bit picks a map doodad's sun scale, 1.0 lit or 0.5 shadowed. 2.5 belongs to an entity's light node.
  - `SpellRec` is the row as stored, column × 4, not a translated copy.
  - A global sequence's clock is anchored at the instance's attach time (`0x714352`).
  - Particle twinkle is a gated size multiplier (`0x7b2adc`).
  - The blob shadow sizes from the Stand box.
  - Data claims are checked against the install: the weapon-trail kits' parameters and alphas, the beam rows' noise, and the maps' `field_16`.
  - Dozens more turned up on the way: renamed or deleted items, docs sitting on the wrong item, stale counts and links.
- **Deviation labels.** "Deviation:" now marks only a choice with a reason. An unbuilt behaviour says so plainly.
- **Verification.** Every file strips to identical code, and `cargo fmt --check` is clean. Four second readers compared every file old against new, restored the facts the rewrite had dropped, and checked each new citation against the reference, the code and the shipped data.

String literals are untouched; they are #92.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 fdfd8d39ec Comments in benilla-world: one line of fact each, no history, no record numbers (#121)
Part of #41: the comments of `benilla-world`, Rust and WGSL, are rewritten to the rule in `docs/METHOD.md`, which is what the code does and the reference fact behind it, in a line. 24,226 comment lines become 8,863.

- **The mechanical strip.** The citations that were only a private record number go first, and each edit is shown to be a pure removal.
- **Wrong facts corrected.** The rewrite corrects the comments that stated wrong facts. Among them:
  - `0x6b62e0` is the WMO group's liquid renderer, not a doodad drawer.
  - The reference creates a WMO's props once, when a group enters its streaming window (`0x698720` → `0x695aa0`). It then admits them each frame the portal walk visits the group (`0x685d70` → `0x6838f0`). The old text had them created per visible group.
  - The liquid query's comments now state the reference's order: the map-object leg first, then the ADT (`0x69b6d0`). They no longer call the Outdoors/Inside split a match.
  - The interior probe runs from the character, not the camera.
  - The reference lights ground clutter. The old comment said it draws unlit.
  - The model-particle "pool order" deviation was wrong. Each instance is its own mesh, depth-sorted every frame.
  - The reference's vertical field of view follows the aspect ratio (44.1° at 16:9). The comment now gives it beside our fixed 45°.
  - The effect shader's far wall is the live `farclip`, 177 to 777 yd, not a fixed 777 yd.
Five second readers compared every file old against new, restored the facts the rewrite had dropped, and checked each new citation against the reference.

Defects the rewrite surfaced outside the comments are filed as their own issues (#106, #114, #115, #116). The comments here state what the code does. String literals are untouched; they are #92.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 d69d09dfce Comments in benilla-assets: one line of fact each, no history, no record numbers (#95)
Part of #41: the comments of `benilla-assets`, Rust and WGSL, rewritten to the rule in `docs/METHOD.md`: what the code does and the reference fact behind it, in a line. 3,872 comment lines become 1,568.

- The citations that were only a private record number go first, mechanically, each edit shown to be a pure removal.
- The rewrite corrects the comments that stated wrong facts: the alpha-key cutoff now cites the reference's per-blend-mode table (`0x85ad20`), the texture-filter note names the subsystems that ignore the global setting, a test doc said an exhausted variation roll returns the last variation (it returns the first), and about twenty more found on the way (renamed or deleted items, a shader flag the doc misread, docs sitting on the wrong function). "Deviation:" now marks only a choice with a reason; an unbuilt behaviour says so plainly.
- Verified: every file strips to identical code, and `cargo fmt --check` is clean. A second reader compared every file old against new, restored the facts the rewrite had dropped, and checked each new citation against the reference.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 d936857673 Comments in the small crates: one line of fact each, no history, no record numbers (#93)
Part of #41: the comments of the thirteen small crates (`benilla-adt`, `-blp`, `-buildstamp`, `-bytes`, `-dbc`, `-m2`, `-mpq`, `-srp`, `-visual`, `-wdt`, `-wmo`, `-worldview` and `benilla`) rewritten to the rule in `docs/METHOD.md`: what the code does and the reference fact behind it, in a line. 2,176 comment lines become 1,029.

- The citations that were only a private record number go first, mechanically, each edit shown to be a pure removal.
- The rewrite corrects the comments that stated wrong facts: the M2 header's selection-ring claim, the texture-transform and MCNK impassable-flag notes, a DBC reader note that said short records zero-pad (they do not, #17), and about twenty more found on the way. The SRP handshake's redraw and redial are marked as a deviation, with the measured reason.
- Verified: every file strips to identical code, and `cargo fmt --check` is clean. A second reader compared every file old against new and restored the facts the rewrite had dropped.

String literals are untouched; they are #92.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 5b94c3eba8 Comments name no chat reporter, channel or message id, and quote no report (#90)
Comments that named a chat reporter, cited a chat channel or message id, or quoted a report word for word now state the symptom in their own words. The test fixtures that used real character names use invented ones.

Verified: 52 of the 56 files strip to identical code with their comments removed; the other 4 differ only in the fixture names, and with those mapped back they strip identical too. `cargo fmt --check` is clean, and the `ui_party`, `unit_frame_tests` and `capture` tests pass with the install present and no skips. Record numbers still in these comments go with the comment pass (#41).

Fixes #34

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 8952d590e6 comments cite the reference by address, not by private note (#30)
Comments that pointed into the maintainer's private reverse-engineering notes (a note by name, a
path, a section or finding id, the analysis's own name for a client function, a process word) now
carry the fact itself, cited by the reference client's address, by vmangos file and line, or as
"the reference". Nobody outside could follow those pointers.

Comment text only, plus the test-assert and log strings that carried the same pointers. No claim
changes: a comment the notes have since corrected keeps its wording here, and correcting it is
separate work.

The two reference generators, `scripts/gen-reference-globals.py` and
`scripts/gen-reference-verb-events.py`, named the private notes' layout to find their inputs. They
now take the input files as arguments (`--capture`, `--framexml`, `--names`, `--extents`,
`--disasm`). Run on the same inputs, both write the committed tables row for row; only the two
header lines that named the old environment variable change.

Checked per file:
- the code is identical: each file with its comments stripped compares equal before and after; a
changed string literal is compared under a mask that proves only literal text moved and every
  literal kept its line count;
- no client address the old text cited was dropped;
- a second reviewer checked every added address against its derivation;
- a detector for the notes' names, paths, ids, function names and process words finds none left;
- `scripts/gates.sh` is green.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 9649ef9a1b the repo carries no .claude/: the run switches move into CONTRIBUTING (#28)
The probe skill was a Claude-only file, and its promises held on one machine: its shield needs an
account named probe and digits, which CONTRIBUTING never asks for, and its long-run advice was
macOS's. The switches every checkout has for an unattended run are plain text in CONTRIBUTING
now, read by any tool; METHOD points there, AGENTS.md drops the skills folder, and .gitignore
leaves .claude/ to each person.

Sam SungandClaude Opus 5.5 b410ff2055 the repo carries no Claude Code settings (#23)
A committed .claude/settings.json bound everyone who opens the repo in Claude Code: it switched
their auto memory off, and its one hook guarded the install against Claude's Edit and Write
tools only, never a write through the shell or by another agent. The rule it backed is enforced
for every tool by the code and by scripts/smoke.sh's install watch, which METHOD now cites. jq is
no longer a prerequisite, and .gitignore shares only the skills under .claude/.
